Last year, we had to thank YouTube for teaching us how to make sourdough bread, take care of our plants, and develop a regular gym routine (no gym needed).
Brands can capitalize on the popularity of the platform not only by creating useful or entertaining videos, but also by managing their YouTube comment section.
People want to be seen and heard. That’s why audience engagement is key to getting others interested in your brand. It also has the advantage of improving your location with YouTube’s algorithm. To make sure your videos are recommended and appear in search results, you’ll want to be familiar with liking, replying to, and moderating YouTube comments.
In this article, we’ll look at how to:
- Enable comments
- reply to comments
- Report and delete YouTube comments
- write your own comments
- See your YouTube comment history
How to open comments on YouTube?
You’ve published your first video and are now ready to see some action.
First, you’ll want to check if your YouTube comments are turned on.
Follow these steps:
1. Sign in to YouTube Studio
Visit studio.youtube.com to log into your YouTube channel dashboard.
2. Go to settings
On the left, look at the bottom of the page and click the gear icon for Settings.
3. Select Community
From here you can change the default setting on the Defaults tab. By default, this is set to review potentially inappropriate comments. You can keep the setting as is or change it to:
- Allow all comments
- Hold all comments for review
- Or disable comments.
Pro tip: If you notice that YouTube comments are not showing, check that Disable Comments is not selected as your default setting.
On the AutoFilters tab, you can add other settings such as:
- Add moderator
- Approve or hide users
- Block certain words
How to moderate comments on YouTube?
When moderator, you will want to think of yourself as the host of a social gathering. Like any good host, it’s your responsibility to create a fun and engaging environment.
This means you may want to:
- Delete inappropriate comments on your videos.
- Prevent certain users from commenting on your videos in the future.
- Encourage discussion by asking questions.
- Respond to comments and questions about your videos.
Sometimes you may see a highlighted comment tag on some of your comments. If you’re wondering what a highlighted comment means on YouTube, it’s basically automatically generated by the platform itself and is meant to bring the comment to your attention. Once you see the highlighted comment or deal with it, it will disappear.
If you’re active on YouTube and other social media platforms, you may want to use a social media management tool to moderate comments across the board. With Moyens I/O, you can create Streams for accounts and even specific videos, and easily follow and interact with comments from your dashboard.
If you chose Hold all comments for review You will be able to approve YouTube comments directly from Moyens I/O.

Depending on your YouTube comment settings, you’ll see public comments in: Posted in tab or unpublished comments afflicted for Review tab.
If you want to reply to the comments in the next section, you must first provide your stamp of approval.
Note that comments that are held or under review can only wait for approval for 60 days. After that, they will be deleted.
You have several options for how to respond:
1. Use the smart reply feature.
If you’re in a hurry and think YouTube generated replies might say that better than you, say “Thanks!” Just click one of the few options provided, such as Short, sweet and meaningful.
2. Shoot Answer To write your original message

How to report YouTube comments
Click the three dots next to the like, dislike and like options in the YouTube studio section. From there, you’ll have the option to click the red flag and report a comment.
If you do, make sure the post clearly violates YouTube’s guidelines, otherwise the platform is unlikely to take action. This is a feature you can use if you see threats, harassment, spam or phishing comments, or content that seems completely inappropriate for the platform.
How to delete comments on YouTube?
YouTube makes it easy for its users to delete comments.
Just use it sparingly. Your viewers will notice when comments are deleted. And some brands may have a bad reputation for turning off viewer complaints or dialogue.
If you’re holding comments for review, click the trash can icon below the comment to remove it.
If the comment has already been published, click the three dots below the comment and then To pick up from the list.
How to disable comments on YouTube
Like deleting comments, disabling comments is generally not a good practice. This is because you want your audience to engage with you and build a relationship with your brand.
If you still think it’s necessary, you can disable comments like this:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio
- choose Settings (gear icon) on the left
- To choose Community
- Hungry defaults tab
- Under Comments on your new videos choose Disable comments
- don’t forget to hit Save
