Instagram Stories: I don’t like
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: You can’t “like” an Instagram story.
Regular Instagram posts are very similar to Facebook posts (no surprise, both owned and developed by the same company). You can like a post or picture by tapping the icon on the right, whether it’s a like on Facebook or a heart symbol on Instagram. However, Instagram Stories work a little differently. For whatever reason, Instagram doesn’t want people to “like” stories – probably because it will disappear again along with story likes. Instead, if you want to have a positive (or negative) relationship with the creator of a Story, Instagram asks you to send a personal message to the creator of the story.
While this may seem like a bit of a burden and hassle (and it is), it’s really consistent with the message of the Instagram Stories feature. The Stories feature offers users a much more intimate look at other people’s lives, not just one snap. Forcing one user to message another to comment on a Story is Instagram’s way of encouraging more connections between users.

- Open a story from your Instagram feed by tapping on it.
- Tap the text “Send Message” at the bottom of the story screen.
- You can send a quick statement or write a message.
- Tap “Send” and your message will go directly to the user you are viewing.
Unlike regular Instagram messages that are public, Instagram Stories messages are sent directly to the person you sent them to. They’re also directly linked to the story you’re messaging about, so they disappear with the story within 24 hours.
How Do You Prevent People From Sending You Messages?
The other side of texting is that if you post a lot of popular stories, you may find yourself overwhelmed with messages or have a follower who is persistently harassing you. Whether it’s out of admiration or because they decided to get attention, the result is the same and no one wants to be disturbed all day long. If you get a lot of messages or don’t want to hear from someone, you can block them, but only if you have your profile set to private. Here’s how to block a user who is bothering you.
- Go to your profile and swipe right to reveal the “Settings” icon that looks like a little hardware.
- Tap “Privacy”.
- Tap on “Account Privacy”.
- Enable the “Private Account” setting.
- Now go to your follower list and find the person you want to block.
- Tap the three-dot icon next to their name.
- The “Remove” option will pop up in a message. Click on it and the person is gone.
To the person you just removed, your account will now look like the image below. Keep in mind, though, that if you go back to a public profile, the person can follow you back without any requests. But if you keep your account private, that person must request access, which you can choose to ignore. Hurray!
