How to Get More Snapchat Bitmoji Animations

Recently, Snapchat introduced a new animated emoji that will help you personalize your snaps more than you can. It takes your own original 2D Bitmoji and makes it 3D animated, allowing you to add yourself to your snaps. If that’s what you love to do, here’s how to use the Snapchat Bitmoji animation.

The 2D Bitmoji was good but didn’t exactly fire the imagination. It is hoped that this new animated 3D Bitmoji will achieve more. Snapchat acquired Bitstrips, the company that originally made Bitnoji, in 2016. After releasing a 2D avatar, we all thought it was a lot of money to spend on a simple cartoon. It seems the guys at Bitstrips are not sitting idle, and the 3D animated Bitmoji is the result of their efforts.

This brings us to the world of AR, Augmented Reality. The 3D animated Bitmoji is projected onto the Snapchat screen and superimposed on the image the camera is pointing at. Since the rear-facing camera is facing away from you, it will be whatever you aim at at the moment. Animation is then added as a layer on top of that, providing an AR experience like no other.

How to create 3D animated Bitmoji

One of the best things about these new Bitmoji is how simple they are to create. To use the 3D animated Bitmoji, you must have created a 2D version for Snapchat.

  1. Open Snapchat and make sure it’s up to date.
  2. Select the Ghost icon and select Create Bitmoji in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Select the Create Bitmoji button on the next screen.
  4. Download the Bitmoji app if you don’t have it yet.
  5. Launch the Bitmoji app and select Create with Snapchat.
  6. Design your avatar.
  7. Select Accept & Connect when you’re done.
  8. Your Bitmoji should now appear on Snapchat.

When your Bitmoji is finished, you have a new avatar that you can use in snaps in 2D mode.

To create the 3D version:

  1. Open the Snapchat app if you have it turned off.
  2. Access the rear-facing camera and tap the screen.
  3. Choose a World Lens. Your 3D Bitmoji should appear on the screen.

World Lenses change how your avatar looks on the screen. Includes skateboard, disco ball, backpack, water cooler and one with glasses. The Earth Lenses change at regular intervals. I also saw a Bitmoji play the guitar and do yoga on the mat. I’m not sure exactly how often they change but they certainly do change regularly.

There’s also the inevitable sponsored World Lenses that play licensed tunes along with the animation. I’m sure many other sponsored or monetized options will come soon. They always do.

Using 3D animated Bitmoji

Until you do something with your 3D animated Bitmoji, it’s just a fancy 2D image stuck on the screen. It only comes to life when you do something with it. To animate your Bitmoji, drag a finger on the screen to move it. You can also pinch to zoom in on the avatar to make it bigger or smaller. Finally, cross your fingers and drag across the screen and your Bitmoji will spin in place.

But that’s not all.

Press and hold the World Lens of your choice and then navigate around pointing your camera at different things. Bitmoji seems to move as the camera moves. Although not so. The Bitmoji stays in place, but the background moves, tricking the eye into thinking the animation is moving and not the background. Really clever.

Edit your Bitmoji

If you want a change, you can edit your Bitmoji as you always do.

  1. Access Bitmoji from within Snapchat.
  2. Select Settings via the gear icon in the top right. Select Bimoji.
  3. Select Edit Bitmoji.
  4. Make and save your changes from the Bitmoji app.

Any changes you make to your Bitmoji will be reflected immediately when you save and exit the editor. You can do this as much as you want.

I don’t usually go for tricks like this, but I think the Snapchat Bitmoji animation is really clever. It takes a simple animation and uses it very cleverly to deliver much more than meets the eye. Since it’s free and most of us already use 2D Bitmoji, this seems like a worthy upgrade.
