Like many other social platforms, Facebook does not allow photo editing after a photo has been posted. Once the photos are uploaded, you cannot change them in any way. This may seem unfair to some users, but it doesn’t look like things will change anytime soon.
Let’s examine the reasons and see what can be done.
Editing Photos on Facebook and After Posting
For example, you are at a party and you took a series of photos with your friends. You decided to upload pictures to show your other friends what a great time you had. You open Facebook and upload the best photos of the group, forgetting to add stickers or hack a friend who is drunk on the couch.
If you open and try to edit your post again, you can only edit the photo description, people tagged and where the photo was taken. You will also be able to adjust the visibility of the photo and the editing options end there.
Facebook is adamant about not allowing its users to modify photos after they’ve been uploaded, as it will open Pandora’s box. It will allow people to edit in nudity or add other inappropriate things to images that have passed Facebook’s security and guidelines checks. Some cunning hackers can take revenge on their ex by changing their photos and getting them banned.
What can you do
While photo editing is clearly out of the picture, let’s see what can be done when you find that a photo you’ve added or added to a comment is wrong or could be improved.
First, you can add new images and replace the original photo in an image post on your profile, group or page. You can also delete and upload a new photo to the comment or status update. Finally, you can change the embedded link of the image you’ve added to a comment. Let’s see how these things are made.
Replace Image in a Post
Let’s say you publish a post with a photo on your page or profile. Note that you will need to edit the photo on your computer. If you want to replace a photo in a post with an edited version, you should do the following:
Find the post you want to change.

Select ‘Edit Post’
Click the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner of the post.

Select Edit Post from the drop-down menu.
Click on the three horizontal dots in the right corner

This allows you to upload your new, better photo to the same post.

Select the photo you want to include in your post and confirm. Now you can go back and delete the original.
Go back to your post and click the three dots again.
Click ‘Delete Photo’ to remove the original, unedited version.

Replace Photo in a Comment
You can similarly replace a photo in a comment. You need to edit the photo on your computer and then upload the original instead. Here’s how it’s done:
- Find the comment containing the problem image. Here is our review:
- Click the three little dots next to your comment.
- Select the Edit option.
- Click the X button to remove the current photo.
- Click in the text box of your comment and press the Shift and Enter keys on your keyboard together to open another line.
- Click the camera icon.
- Select the edited version of your original photo.
- Click the text box again.
- Press Enter. The final result might look like this:
Change Photo Link in Comment
Facebook allows users to link to photos on external sites in their comments. Since you are aiming to change the link of a photo on another site, you cannot edit it. Here’s how you can change the link of a photo in a Facebook comment:
- Find the problematic comment. Our first comment looks like this:
- Click the three little dots next to your comment.
- Select the Edit option.
- Delete the link to your first photo.
- Replace with new one.
- Click the Save button. The final result might look like this:
Frequently Asked Questions
Facebook won’t let me add photos to my post, what’s going on?
There are several reasons why your photo could not be uploaded. First, your edited image is not compatible, try uploading the original image. If the original is loaded and not the edited one, there is a problem with the image.
You can change the image format (like changing it to JPEG), you can also resize it. Facebook recommends images under 15MB. If your photo is a PNG file, it should be under 1 MB. Play with the image or use a different photo editing app to force it to upload.
How can I edit my cover photo?
If you want to edit your cover photo, you have no choice but to upload a new one. Similar to profile pictures, you can click the edit icon and upload a new picture.
Make sure you uncheck Post on your wall for anonymity. This means you can upload a new image without letting everyone on your timeline know you did it.
Can I add a frame to my profile picture after it’s uploaded?
Yes! This is something you can do even after updating your profile picture. Click the edit icon on your profile picture and select ‘Add Frame’. Scroll down and choose the frame you like.
If you want to remove the frame, follow the same process but choose a new frame or click the option to remove it completely. Another great feature is the option to set a frame to last a certain amount of time. From one day to months, set it to ‘Private’ so you don’t have to go back and delete it.
Be Careful What You Upload
It doesn’t look like Facebook will change its policy for editing uploaded photos anytime soon. Therefore, be very careful with the photos you post.
