How to Download Facebook Live Video

Facebook Live is a great way to stay connected with your friends and family in real time. It allows you to share the most precious and exciting moments of your life, from wedding ceremonies to political rallies. Your Facebook connections can watch the event live, or retroactively view a recorded recording if they’re not around.

Can You Download a Facebook Live Video?

The answer to this is a tentative yes. Although some sites claim that you can download videos posted by your friends, there doesn’t seem to be a legit way to download someone else’s videos. However, there may be a workaround that we’ll share with you shortly.

You can download your own videos, but again there is a caveat. Different sites seem to disagree on the exact process for doing this. Below we have shared a few different methods compiled from the annals of the internet. One of these will come in handy when trying to download your own archived videos.

Method One: Using Basic Options

  1. Go to your Facebook profile.
  2. Find your video. It should be on your profile or feed. Check the More tab under your profile.
  3. Have the video open. According to some sources, you do this by clicking on the video’s timestamp. If you’re looking at your feed, it’s located above the video. However, if you go to your video collection on your profile, simply click on the video thumbnail.
  4. Click “More points”. These three dots should be in the upper-right corner of the video window. It can also appear as a downward pointing arrow.
  5. This should bring up a drop-down list of options. Click Download video.
  6. Choose where you want the video to be saved.

Method Two: Some Fancy URL Workout

It starts roughly the same way.

  4. Now things get a little fancy. Go to URL and change “www” to “m”.
  5. Press Enter.
  6. This takes you to a special video view. Right click on the video to get more options.
  7. Click Save As.

Method 3: When Everything Isn’t Complex Enough

Some people don’t seem to see the same options (like the three dots we mentioned under Method One). If the above two methods didn’t get the job done, try this alternative.

  4. Click the timestamp again to bring up a larger view of the video.
  5. See below the video for the list of options on the right. Click Download SD or Download HD.
  6. Choose the location.

You Can Always Cheat

If you still can’t figure out how to download your video or you want to try recording someone else’s, get a screen capture app that lets you record your own screen. There are some easy-to-use apps that are free to download. Just select the screen capture window, play the video and hit the save button.
