While still struggling to surpass more popular messaging apps, Kik has amassed millions of users over time. If you consider yourself an avid Kik user, you probably have several different chats in your app and you may want to customize their personal appearance.
In this article, we will show you how to change the chat theme on Kik and give you other customization tips to make your messaging experience a little more unique.
Changing the Chat Theme
You can set a different chat theme for each of your chats. The process is the same for Android and iOS users. To change chat theme on Kik, follow these steps:
- Find the chat you want to assign a new theme to in your chat list.
- Tap the chat, then tap the name of the user or group at the top.
- Tap Change Chat Theme
- Find a theme you like from the list of available ones and tap Set Theme.
The selected chat will now be displayed with the new skin you selected and everyone in the chat will be able to see it.
Some themes for Kik chat are free, while others can be purchased with the app’s internal currency, Kin. In the next sections we will explain what Kin is, how to earn money and how to buy themes with it.
What is Kin and How is it Earned?
Kin is a digital currency running on the Ethereum platform. While it’s still in development and the Kik team has big ambitions for cryptocurrency in the future, right now the Kin economy revolves around the messaging app. However, it is a digital currency with monetary value, so it can be exchanged for real money.
The Kin Marketplace currently has several options for earning Kin. If you visit the Marketplace, you will find the options available under Win Deals. There are tutorials, quizzes, and other missions that you can complete and be rewarded with with Kin.
Users can earn Kin by interacting with the Kik community such as bug reporting, content production, sharing experiences and services, interacting with brands, and completing surveys. In its current phase, you’ll likely spend your Kin on customization features like themes, emoticons, and chatbots.
How to Buy Chat Themes with Kin?
If you have an Android device, there are two ways to purchase new themes for chat. Unfortunately, no options are currently available for iOS, so iPhone users will have to settle for a selection of free themes.
The first method of purchasing themes on Android is chat. Here’s how to do this:
- Tap a chat from the chat list on Kik, then press the username or group name.
- Select Change Chat Theme to browse available themes. You will notice that the themes available for purchase have a price indicated next to them.
- Select the theme you want to buy and tap Buy.
- Finally, tap Confirm Purchase to complete the transaction.
Note that themes you purchase from chat will be available for any chat, not just the chat you enter to access the purchase option.
The second way to buy chat themes on Kik is through the Kin Marketplace. To use this method, follow these steps:
- Go to the main chat list and tap the Plus (+) icon.
- Tap on Kin Marketplace Beta.
- Under Spending Opportunities, select Chat Themes.
- Find the theme you want to buy, tap Buy, then tap Confirm Purchase.
- Leave the Kin Marketplace and return to the chat list. From there, you will be able to assign the new theme to chats, following the method we described earlier.

Fortunately, focused on a younger audience, Kik offers plenty of customization options and gorgeous, modern themes.
