Most of our communication today is online, and this includes voice conversations. Cell phone calls are outdated. Everyone is used to chatting online and we use social media in various ways.
Viber is one of the most popular applications for online communication. But it is still linked to your mobile number. You cannot open an account without a number. Does this mean you will have to open a new account when you change your mobile number? Read and learn.
Changing Your Phone Number on Viber
Fortunately, Viber has made it possible to save your account even if you decide to change your number. This wasn’t always the case, and many users say it’s a welcome change.
There are many good reasons to change your number without changing your smartphone. For example, you can use a different number when abroad or after switching to a new operator.
If you’re just changing the number and keeping the same phone, here’s what you need to do:
- Change the SIM card first – the new number must be activated for this to work.
- Go to your Viber app.
- At the bottom of your screen, find the options under More.
- Select settings.
- Tap on Account.
- There you will find the item “Change phone number”.
- Select the first option that only changes the number.
- Type and confirm your new number.
- You will now be asked to verify the new number. A code will be automatically sent to your new number via SMS.
- Type the code from the SMS when prompted.
- After completing the verification process, your new number will be linked to your account.
In this case, you can keep all your information, including contacts, messages and public accounts list.
But what if you want to move your Viber account to another device besides a new number?
Change Phone and Number in Viber
If you want to change both your number and the device you use, you must first transfer your contacts. You can only do this with devices of the same type. In other words, you cannot move this data from an iPhone to Android and vice versa.
To make sure everything is saved, follow these steps:
- Using your old phone, refer to the instructions above and change your number.
- Verify the new number from the new device.
- Make a backup of your account and messages in Viber on your old device.
- Download Viber on your new device from Apple Store or Google Play Store. Activate and enter your new phone number.
- You will receive instructions to save your history.
If you are changing your number on another device such as a PC or tablet, do so after downloading the latest updates. Otherwise, you may lose your data and your account will be disabled.
What Happens to Your Purchases?
To transfer your Viber credit to another phone number, you need to open a ticket. Purchases you make in the sticker store and your Viber subscription can be restored. Here’s how to do this:
- Open your app.
- Tap More.
- Select settings.
- Select Account.
- Then go to Purchased.
- Use Restore and you will see all your purchases back in your account.
Do Your Friends Get the Note?
You don’t have to worry about notifying all your friends that you’ve changed your number. Anyone who registered your number prior to the change will receive a chat notification that you have changed your phone number. Rescues will also be offered. When they save your new number, you can stay in touch.
On the other hand, if you changed your number to prevent someone from texting you, you can be sure that there is a way to stay private. All you have to do is create a new Viber account and deactivate the previous one.
If you continue with this, you should know that you will not be able to restore your previous messages to this new account. In most cases, it is much more convenient to block people whose messages bother you.
