How to Automatically Post to Instagram

Whether you’re learning how to be a social media manager or just trying to tackle social media marketing, automation is a valuable tool to use. You can schedule posts ahead of time, have apps handle most of the labor-intensive aspects of social media, and often do more with less time. This tutorial will show you how to automatically post to Instagram.

Consistency is key when using social media for marketing. As soon as your audience gets used to something at a certain time or a certain day, if they don’t understand it, they lose interest. Social networks are very volatile, and with over a billion people vying for attention, you need to offer as much as possible for social media marketing to work.

Automation is just one way to do it.

Automatically post to Instagram

Post scheduling is ideal if you know you’ll be too busy to post during the day. You can schedule a slower time to prepare your posts and then schedule them to be published automatically on an appropriate timeline. That way, you don’t have to interrupt your work or interrupt a meeting just to post an Instagram post because it’s usually the time to do it.

Another advantage of automatically posting to Instagram is quality. We don’t deliver quality when we’re in a hurry or stressed out, so it’s better to prepare shipments in advance when we have the luxury of time. In this way, we can provide the quality and consistency that our target audience deserves and expects.

You’ll need to use third-party tools to schedule posts because it can’t be done in-app. I’m using Hootsuite but others are available. I will describe Hootsuite but also link to other tools that can do the same thing.

You will need a business account to automatically post to Instagram. If you already have one, skip this section. If you don’t, do this:

  1. Login to Instagram and select your profile.
  2. Select the three-dot menu icon.
  3. Select Switch to Business Profile.
  4. Select your Facebook business page when prompted.
  5. Make sure your profile is public and your contact information is correct.
  6. Select Done.

As long as you already have a Facebook business page, you can connect it and continue. If you don’t have one of these, why not? Before doing the above, create one and prep it first. You need to link Instagram to that business page to convert it properly. When it’s done, we can continue.

Schedule your posts

You need a social media management tool to automatically post to Instagram. I use Hootsuite but there are others on the market.

  1. Log in to Hootsuite and select your profile.
  2. Select Add Social Network, enter your Instagram account and select Connect with Instagram.
  3. Select New Post and add your content, image or links.
  4. Select Publish on Program Date from Hootsuite’s submenu.
  5. Use the default schedule time or configure your own.
  6. Select Schedule when you’re ready to go.
  7. Rinse and repeat until all the posts you want to schedule are ready to go.

Hootsuite is one of many social media management (SMM) platforms available. Others include Later, Buffer, Sprout Social, SocialFlow, and Sprinklr. Each is useful in its own way and will have its own strengths and weaknesses. They all have different price points, too, so you can choose the one that best suits you and your budget.

Best time to post on Instagram

There’s a lot of science and math that goes into social media marketing. To get the most out of it, you need to know when is the best time to post, the type of post that is most likely to be best received by your target audience, trending hashtags, and a host of other data. However, timing is very important.

When you schedule your posts depends on your industry. For example, travel posts work well between 9am and 1pm on Fridays. Probably when office workers are tired and looking for an escape. Entertainment posts are successful Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 15:00. Food drops well at noon on Fridays, while retailers better ship at noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

There is a very detailed post on the best times to post on Instagram and some of the reasons why. They are data driven and use analytics from Instagram to identify when most people engage with these industries.

Auto Instagram is just the tip of the iceberg. You can program Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and others in the same way using the same tools. Worth checking out!
