Marketers who want to learn more about their Instagram audience now have the option to sign up for an Instagram creator account.

Instagram introduced the account option as an alternative to the business profile in early 2019. After a short beta testing period, the social platform has made its creator profiles available to everyone.

How are Instagram creator profiles different from a regular business profile? And are all the new features really worth the switch? Keep reading to find out.

Who are Instagram creator accounts for?

Initially, Instagram offered its creative account features to any profile with more than 10,000 followers.

This tells us two things:

  • Instagram wants to double the influencers. 87.1% of influencers say Instagram is their best platform. Instagram is aware that influencers play a big role in their apps and now wants to offer more services to attract them and keep sharing content there.
  • Instagram wants to separate businesses from influencers. Creator profiles contain features and tools that cater specifically to influencers who are not committed to more traditional business models. They officially acknowledge that the two have different needs when it comes to social management. This attempt at separation can best be seen in the image below.

Instagram is targeting individual users with its creator profile offers. In fact, if you go to change your account, the app will show that creator profiles “Best for public figures, creators, artists and influencers

Instagram creator accounts offer a plethora of new features for influencers to dig even deeper into follower metrics to help engage and appeal to influencers.

What special features do Instagram creator accounts include?

is this really Is it worth switching from your personal or business account to an Instagram creator profile? Yes, if you want to know more about your users and better manage your posts and messages.

Instagram introduces a number of new features to help creators learn more about their users:

Detailed growth data

Instagram creator accounts give you an in-depth look at your followers with information like:

  • Number of unfollowers and followers per day. With only one business account, users can only access their weekly unfollow and follow counts. This helps influencers because they can now see which videos are affecting them positively or negatively every day.
  • Demographic data (age, location, etc.). Instagram creator profiles, also available for business accounts, give influencers the ability to look at exactly who their followers are and provide them with content.
  • Instagram creator dashboard. Instagram has introduced a new “Creator Studio” to help influencers get all their insights in one handy dashboard (see below).

Streamlined messaging

Influencers receive countless messages every day for their collaborations, fans who just want to say “Hello” and creepy followers on social media who have nothing to do with it.

awkward DM exchange (marriage proposal from a stranger)
Yup.

With a work or personal account, users only have one primary inbox for all their DMs, plus a folder of message requests for DMs from people they don’t follow.

With Instagram creator accounts, influencers have access to three folders:

  • Priority. The messages the influencer wants to receive and be aware of.
  • General. Messages that the influencer does not want to receive notifications about.
  • Wants Messages from people the influencer doesn’t follow.

Creators can move messages between folders at any time. This allows users to prioritize messages from friends, family, and other people they want to hear.

more tags

Instagram creator profiles give users more flexibility in how they tag and brand themselves.

With a business account, Instagram assigns the category you use on your Facebook page linked to your profile. This means that if you’re an “underwater basket weaver” on your Facebook page, you’re an “underwater basket weaver” on your Instagram business profile.

With an Instagram creator account though, you can choose the hashtag you want to brand yourself with more options.

This allows you to get truly niche with your personal brand and choose the label that is right for you.

flexible contact

Influencers are flooded with calls and emails for collaborations, influencer marketing talks, and spam every day. Now with their Instagram creator profiles, they have the option to turn off their contact button to stop this flow of requests.

Previously, Instagram business profiles provided a call to action for followers to contact users using the contact information provided by the user. Now influencers can turn off these contact details at any time.

This gives users more representation as to who is communicating with them, or rather, not communicating with them.

Instagram creator profile vs Instagram business profile

With all the features included with a creator profile, there’s no real reason to keep a business profile unless you use a third-party planning and analytics tool (like Moyens I/O) to streamline your Instagram management. Currently, posting from creator accounts is not supported by the Instagram API.

However, if you’re an individual who has a brand you want to promote on Instagram and doesn’t need to plan content ahead or manage multiple accounts from a single dashboard, it’s probably worth the switch. You’ll get more in-depth analytics, not to mention the control over your inbox and flexibility in how you brand your account.

It’s worth noting that the creator account features are designed to assist profiles with a large number of followers. (If you want to increase your number of followers, read our article on how to get free Instagram followers). But if you have fewer followers, they can still help you.
