Does Tinder automatically renew subscriptions? How can you stop subscriptions? Can you get a refund if you forget to cancel but don’t want to pay anymore? Read on for the answers to these questions.
Tinder needs a little introduction. The dating app that forever changed the way we meet important people, be it temporary or long-term. The basic app is free to use and requires no subscription as long as you don’t mind the ads, but to get even more than that, Tinder offers two subscription packages.
Tinder subscriptions
These packages are Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold. Tinder Plus offers some useful features; the most important of these is that it removes ads which cost almost $9.99 just for it. Tinder Plus also offers Rewind that lets you undo a wrong swipe, unlimited right swipes, 5 Super Likes, the ability to hide distance and age, and the ability to change your location on Passport.
Tinder Gold adds the Likes feature. This gives you a grid page of people who have already swiped on you. If you don’t want all that scrolling hassle and want to quickly track your way to a date, here’s how you do it.
Both Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold require a subscription. Depending on the platform you use, you subscribe using the Google Play Store or the Apple Store. If you use Tinder Online, you pay directly. All payments automatically renew subscriptions. This is pictured as a convenience for the user, but is actually a tried and tested way to maximize revenue. Either way, they will continue to take the money until you stop them.
Cancel your Tinder subscription on Android
You can unsubscribe from Tinder using your phone or web browser. It only takes a few seconds and accepts the change. Your Tinder subscription will continue until the end of the billing period when it will revert to the free version.
- Open the Google Play Store app on your phone.
- Select Account from the left.
- Go to Subscriptions and select Tinder.
- Select Cancel or Unsubscribe.
- Confirm your decision to unsubscribe.
Google Play says you won’t be refunded for partial months you paid for but don’t want to use. However, if you forgot the subscription and highlighted it within 48 hours, contacting Google customer support will get your money back.
You can also cancel your Tinder subscription from your computer.
- Go to Google Play and login to your account.
- Select My Subscriptions from the left menu.
- Select Tinder in the middle pane and choose Manage.
- Select Cancel Subscription from the options.
The final result is exactly the same. You remain a premium member until your paid period expires, and then you revert to the free version of Tinder.
Cancel your Tinder Gold subscription on iOS
The rules that apply to Android also apply to Apple. Your premium subscription will last until the end of the billing period when it will switch to free Tinder.
- On iOS go to your Settings.
- Select iTunes & App Store and sign in using your Apple ID.
- Go to Subscriptions and select Manage.
- Select Tinder and Unsubscribe.
Turn off auto-renewal to avoid further automatic payments. If you don’t turn this off, Tinder may get paid more next month. Make sure this setting is turned off to avoid automatic subscription renewal. If you don’t see the toggle, log into iTunes on your computer and do it there.
Apple also says they don’t refund the payment, but if you contact them directly, they usually will.
cancel Tinder Gold online
If you are using Tinder Online, you cannot unsubscribe as it does not use the app store. You have to manually unsubscribe using the website.
- Sign in to Tinder Online.
- Select your profile icon and select Manage Account.
- Select Cancel and disable auto-renewal.
Although Tinder Online works differently from app versions, the rules are the same. You will have access to Tinder Plus or Gold until your paid period expires, after which you return to Tinder for free.
Tinder definitely auto-renews subscriptions. Like many premium apps, the company knows it wins goodwill by keeping things simple for users. More importantly for them, they provide a revenue stream whether you actually use the app or not. Because unsubscribing takes some effort, Tinder knows that many people forget or won’t bother in case they want to use it again. Which company will ignore free money?
