Beware, scammers pretend to be Facebook to steal your data

A new phishing campaign dubbed “Meta-Phish” uses Facebook messages in its chain of attacks to trick users into providing account credentials and personally identifiable information. According to analysts from cybersecurity firm Trustwave, A phishing attack is done via an email sent to the recipient’s inbox.

This message features a link to an actual post that mimics Facebook, allowing attackers to reinforce the credibility of their attack. Content is designed to appear legitimatewith a fake “Page Support” profile with the official Facebook logo appearing.

Scammers want to steal your Facebook account

Emails sent to destinations imply a copyright infringement issue in one of the recipient’s Facebook posts and warns that their account will be deleted within 48 hours if no objections are raised. Obviously, this is wrong. Allegedly, victims who click on the appeal link are redirected to the fake Facebook page.

This post contains a link to an external phishing site named after Meta, the company that owns Facebook. Users are asked to enter their username and password to log in to their account, but it is impossible to log in as it is not a real Facebook page. Entering your identifiers will allow scammers to recover them. and thus taking control of your account to hijack your identity.

Worse still, when sending this data, The page also collects the victim’s IP address and geolocation information and leaks it all to a Telegram account under the threat actor’s control. Now they can bypass all security, including biometric authentication.

Trustwave advises users to be cautious when receiving notices of alleged copyright infringement from Facebook, as the company is unlikely to send such an email.
