Vivo NEX Gaming Review: Up There With The Best

Chinese smartphone giant Vivo has recently launched its truly bezel-less flagship Vivo NEX in India at a competitive price of just Rs. The 44,990 has top-of-the-line specs that justify its flagship status. The smartphone is Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. From the looks of it, the Vivo NEX certainly looks like a powerful flagship, but how does the device actually perform in real-world usage and most importantly when gaming? We put the Vivo NEX to the test to find out and played quite a few games on the device, especially those that pushed the included hardware to its limits. So let’s jump right into the review and find out how Vivo NEX works while gaming:

Vivo NEX Gaming Review

Before getting into the game, we highlighted the hardware by running it through some standard benchmark tests to get an approximate idea of how the device stands up against other flagships on the market, including the OnePlus 6.

Vivo NEX Comparisons

In our testing, we found that synthetic benchmarks were a cinch for the Vivo NEX and it performed exceptionally well, scoring the highest among other flagships on AnTuTu while keeping up with the party in Geekbench 4 and 3DMark. The device managed to score an impressive 286185 on AnTuTu, beating the OnePlus 6 and ZenFone 5Z, which secured 284642 and 270031 respectively.. However, the Vivo NEX lags behind the Xiaomi Black Shark, which tops the AnTuTu chart with a staggering 288222.

In Geekbench 4, the Vivo NEX manages to score a respectable 2409 in single-core and 9070 in multi-core; this is slightly behind the OnePlus 6 in single-core scores of 2416 and multi-core 9093.. Surprisingly, both devices outperform the Xiaomi Black Shark, which topped the AnTuTu charts with a score of 2412 in single-core and 8528 in multi-core.

In keeping with streaming, we also ran 3DMark on the Vivo NEX and were pleasantly surprised by its performance. The device scored 4326 in Sling Shot Extreme – OpenGL ES 3.1 and 3265 in Sling Shot Extreme – Vulkan.. While the NEX’s scores were quite respectable, it wasn’t quite as good as the Xiaomi Black Shark or One Plus 6, which took first and second place on the leaderboard.

Vivo NEX Gaming Performance

While synthetic benchmarks are great for preliminary evaluation of any device, they don’t paint a full picture of its performance. Extensive use of the device is required to test real-world performance, and since this is a game review, that’s exactly what we did. I played the popular PUBG Mobile, Modern Combat 5, Asphalt Xtreme and NFS No Limits to test the performance and the results were pretty great to say the least..

Vivo Nex

In PUBG Mobile, Vivo NEX ran the game without breaking a sweat at the highest graphics setting possible. The game automatically chose HD setting under graphics with high framerate and style set to classic, but I took it further and set the graphics settings to HDR, framerate ultra and style to realistic, completely maxing out everything I can.

Despite running the game at a higher-than-recommended setting, the NEX ran PUBG nicely and I didn’t see any frame drops or stuttering. I played a lot of matches in a row, which warmed up the device a bit, but it didn’t have any negative effect on its performance.

Vivo Nex

Next up, I ran Asphalt Xtreme on the device and once again the Vivo NEX had absolutely no issues running the game at maximum graphics settings. The game loaded quickly and I played a few races, did everything I could in the game and phone performance remained smooth.. I did not encounter any heating problems while playing Asphalt, so I guess it will not force the hardware as much as PUBG Mobile.

Vivo Nex

Next up, I moved on to Modern Combat 5, and unsurprisingly, the NEX was also powered by that game. The game automatically chose the maximum available graphics settings and ran uninterruptedly in my hours of gaming session. All went well, and to my surprise, Asphalt is still running in the background of the device, so I quickly got back to driving without skipping a beat.

Vivo Nex

Finally, I played NFS No Limits on the device and at this point I was hoping the device could run this game without any issues as well. Again, Vivo NEX delivered and ran the game at maximum graphics settings without breaking a sweat.. Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed gaming on the Vivo NEX as it not only performs quite well, but its beautiful bezel-less Super AMOLED display provides a much more immersive experience than other competing flagships.

Vivo NEX Gaming Review: Mobile Gaming on Another Level

The Vivo NEX is definitely among the best when it comes to performance, and the smartphone does great in both synthetic benchmarks and gaming. The phone has the ability to easily handle anything and everything you throw at it, but it does get a little hot to the touch when subjected to heavy load for an extended period of time. Despite this, the device continues to work and does not give any gas. In addition to the epic performance of the smartphone, the vibrant bezel-less display provides an immersive gaming experience and the absence of an intrusive notch makes it one of the best smartphones on the market for gaming. It is priced at Rs. The 44,990, Vivo NEX is a compelling buy if you’re looking for a smartphone that doesn’t skimp on the performance front.
