“WOAH”: NFL appeals Sue L. Robinson’s 6-game suspension for Deshaun Watson

The Deshaun Watson story may not be over, as many thought, when disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson decided to suspend the Cleveland Browns quarterback for only the first six regular games of the 2022 NFL season.

The 26-year-old quarterback has filed 24 lawsuits against his name by 24 different female masseurs for allegedly sexually assaulting Deshaun Watson during his spell at the Houston Texans. Watson’s suspension was deemed inadequate by many, and the NFL has now decided to appeal the decision made by Sue L. Robinson.

League’s appeal gives NFL commissioner Roger Goodell or someone to whom he assigned the authority to impose a harsher punishment on Watson. In his 16-page report, Robinson revealed that the NFL was arguing for at least one year suspension of Deshaun Watson, so the 6-game suspension fell far short of the league’s expectations.

The NFL exercised its right of appeal under the collective bargaining agreement on Wednesday. The players union will have to respond on Friday. The union also has a second option, which would be to appeal the decision in a federal court, which will extend the case.

Robinson had previously claimed in his report that he had only decided to grant a six-game suspension on the basis of precedent set by the league in matters of nonviolent sexual conduct. However, all that could change if Roger Goodell decides to impose a stricter penalty for the allegations against Deshaun Watson.
