Jon Gruden hopes for a second chance in the NFL
The first report of Jon Gruden’s emails containing racist, anti-gay and sexist rhetoric was published in a Wall Street Journal article on Oct. Raiders that weekend, before the New York Times published an October 11 article with more emails. That evening, Gruden announced his resignation from an estimated $100 million 10-year deal he had signed to leave ESPN’s Monday Night Football booth and rejoin the Raiders in 2018.
The emails that Gruden exchanged with former Washington executive Bruce Allen were discovered during an NFL investigation into the working conditions of the Washington team.
Judge Nancy L. Allf of Nevada denied the NFL’s requests to compel arbitration and dismiss the case outright on May 25. This decision allowed the possibility of a jury trial. During his speech in Little Rock on Tuesday, Gruden began to cry as the audience applauded him.
Following Gruden’s dismissal, the Raiders went 7-5 under interim coach Rich Bisaccia. The club won their last four games and finished 10-7, earning their second post-season appearance since 2002. But after losing in a wildcard game to the reigning AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals, Davis fired Bisaccia and was replaced by the veteran New England Patriots. employees Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels, respectively.
