“We are broken” – Houston mourns the loss of a young talent in Darius Lee as multiple injured in mass shooting in Harlem
The reason for such mass shootings is unclear to everyone, but it’s safe to say that the United States is losing more blood than ever before. Local basketball star Darius Lee, 21, has been pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center as his dismayed mother mourns her son, who has returned from school for the holidays. While a firearm was seized at the scene, no one has yet been arrested in connection with the shootings and investigations are continuing, according to the NYPD.
Lee from Harlem, New York, Houston Baptist University, He was on his way to graduating with a bachelor’s degree in December and was recently named HBU Robbie Robertson Male Student of the Year, according to a statement from the school. Lee was a Second Team All-Southland senior last season after leading the Huskies in points and rebounds. He finished sixth nationally in steals per game, averaging 18.2 points per game.
“We are devastated. Darius was an extraordinary young man who loved the Lord, his mother, his family, his teammates, his friends and the entire HBU family. We are in shock and cannot think about this news. My heart breaks for his mother, his sister and his entire family and our basketball team. The only thing we can find solace in right now is knowing where Darius is. He is in the arms of Jesus… We know this for real. And one day we’ll see him again.” Ron Cottrell, head coach of Houston Baptist and Darius, said in a statement.
“He was an innocent kid playing basketball at school. He cared about basketball. One day she decided to stay out and that’s what happened. My brother is gone. He’s a great boy. He left for no reason. I was trying to figure it out myself.” Lee’s sister, Tiara, spoke in tears as she was horrified by such sudden news about her brother.
The attack came amid national concerns over gun violence and as the US Supreme Court is considering whether to repeal a law that makes it harder to legally carry a handgun in New York. Filming so far this year in New York is down 11% from last year. Murders are down 12%, but are still at their second-highest since 2012.
As we try to calm ourselves during these difficult times, our hearts go out to the family of all victims, especially Lee’s family, whose grief is incomprehensible to us. We wish them strength and hope, and pray that such incidents will not happen again.
