Top 4 Ways to Remove a Device from Apple ID

Your Apple ID is the most important node in the Apple ecosystem that controls all your devices. It syncs seamlessly between your account settings and sets up a data backup to iCloud and also acts as an authentication tool. That’s why you should periodically review and remove devices you no longer use from your Apple ID. This helps prevent security-related issues on volumes running outdated software-firmware versions that may contain security vulnerabilities.

There are four different ways you can remove devices from your Apple ID. The first method involves using an iPhone or iPad. Alternatively, you can use a Mac. But if you don’t have access to another personal iOS or macOS device, you can use the Apple ID management portal or iCloud.com web app for the task at hand instead. But before you get started, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Removing a Device from an Apple ID

If you want to simply remove an old device that you no longer use, the whole process is quite simple. Delete your Apple ID from your list of related devices using the instructions that follow and you’re done. The device will no longer receive two-factor authentication codes, which increases security if it later falls into the wrong hands.

However, when you want to remove a device you don’t recognize, you should change your Apple ID password immediately afterwards. Even if you signed in to the device a while ago and forgot everything, it is still wise to set a new password as a precaution. Also, consider adding two-factor authentication if you haven’t already.

However, it would be wise not to remove devices that you still use yourself. This prevents the device from using iCloud services, which puts your data at risk as it will no longer sync or take a backup. Remove the device only if you plan to stop using it completely or if you want to set it up with another Apple ID.

When it comes to selling a device, there are a few complications. For starters, logging out of the device from your Apple ID won’t completely sign you out. You must manually log out by entering your password – otherwise the device will be subject to Activation Lock which prevents the receiver from using it. Also, it is best to take the necessary precautions by deleting all data before selling the device.

That brings us to our next problem – if you sell your device to someone else without signing out first, simply removing it from your Apple ID will not be enough. In order for the person to sign in with their Apple ID, you must also sign out of that device. If it is not possible to physically access the device, you must remotely wipe the device using Find My iPhone before removing it.
