How to Delete Loose Channel

If you’re not careful, your Slack account could be in shambles before you know it. To overcome this, it’s a good idea to regularly remove channels you no longer use from your sidebar.

So, how do you get rid of a Slack channel? We will guide you through the process. You will learn how to delete an archived and an unarchived Slack channel.

How to Delete an Unarchived Slack Channel

Deleting a Slack channel from your sidebar is a simple process. To do this, follow the steps below.

Stage 1: Right-click the Slack channel you want to delete in your sidebar.

Step 2: Click the Additional options tab.

Stage 3: At the bottom of the page, click on Delete channel.

Step 4: Check the box next to “Yes, permanently delete this channel”.

Step 5: Click Delete Channel. Slack should have cleaned your channel now.

Another way to delete an unarchived Slack channel is outlined in the steps below.

Stage 1: Click on the channel you want to delete.

Step 2: Select More with three dots on the right.

Stage 3: Select Additional options.

Step 4: As with the first method, you will see a list of options. Click Delete Channel at the bottom of the page.

After deleting a Slack channel, you cannot recover anything. In some cases, you may want to archive it for this reason.

How to Delete an Archived Slack Channel

If you later choose to delete an archived channel, you can do that too.

First, you need to find the channel you want to delete. To do this:

Stage 1: Click on the channel browser tab at the top of the page.

Step 2: Type the name of the channel you are looking for in the search bar.

Stage 3: Once the results are loaded, click on the channel you want to delete.

Once you are in the channel, you will have the option to turn it off at the bottom of the page. If you click this, it will delete your Slack page.

Alternatively, you can remove an archived channel by following the steps below.

Stage 1: On your channel, click the three dots next to More. The icon looks the same as the one found in the previously mentioned methods of this article.

Step 2: Click the Delete option.

Stage 3: Your channel will no longer appear in the archived section in your Slack workspace.

What to Do If You Can’t See the Delete Option

While you usually have the ability to open a new channel in Slack, you will not always be allowed to delete it. This is especially true if you’re a member of a domain that you didn’t create.

If someone else has added you to the Slack workspace, you may not have permission to delete the channel. Typically, these are reserved for administrators only.

You can check if you need special permissions by going to your channel, clicking the three dots, and looking at the drop-down menu. If you can’t delete it, the last option would be to leave.

If you don’t have the option to delete your channel, you’ll need to contact an admin or your company’s IT team. They will be able to remove it permanently.
