11 Best Concept Keyboard Shortcuts to Boost Your Productivity

Notion, San-Francisco-based startup is the hottest trend in productivity. The software has become popular with consumers because of its unique note-taking approach. Instead of showing a simple note, the app treats each sentence as a block. Users can customize each block. The app spoils you with a variety of templates.

Overall, Notion lets you organize ideas, projects, and to-dos in a unique yet powerful way. That’s why Evernote has been the number one destination for switchers.

Notion supports mobile platforms, but they are web wrappers and far from native. The actual functions are in the desktop area. Notion’s Windows and Mac apps are loaded with useful features. To use them quickly and efficiently, you need to master the keyboard shortcuts.

In this post, we’ll show you the 13 best Notion keyboard shortcuts to boost your productivity.

Note: The Command (cmd) button on Mac works the same as the Ctrl key on Windows. Of course I will talk about both. But one thing to keep in mind before we start the list.

1. Create a New Note

Want to quickly create a new note? Just type Ctrl + N or Cmd + N (Mac) and Notion will create a new note for you. You can also open a separate Notion window with the Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N shortcut. Useful when working with multiple projects.

2. Switch to Dark Mode

Both Microsoft and Apple have adopted a dark theme in their operating systems. To keep up with the trend, third-party apps have started offering dark mode support. Fortunately, Notion is one of them. Press Ctrl + Shift + L or Cmd + Shift + L on macOS to switch to dark mode. Use the same shortcut to switch back to the light theme.

3. Create a Comment

One of Notion’s core strengths is workplace collaboration. Tracking changes and suggestions made by team members is seamless in practice. You can quickly create a comment at the end of the block with the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + M or Cmd + Shift + M.

4. Inline Code

The concept can be quite useful for developers as well. You can quickly turn a block or entire sentence into a code. Select all the text and type the shortcut Ctrl + E or Cmd + E to convert it to a code.

5. Customize Block

Note-taking apps often require you to select text and then choose an option from the menu bar. Whereas Notion requires a short command at the beginning or end of the block. Medicine /return and you will be presented with various options such as Heading 1, to do, code, page, bullet list and more.

I use this often. It allows you to customize each block as you wish and also you don’t need to remember any shortcuts for each option.

6. Color a Block

As I mentioned earlier, Notion will not throw every possible option to the user. They are there but embedded in the UI. You have to use it via shortcuts. You can type /Color at the end of the block and the options will change the color of the sentence. And even better, you can type a color name such as /Red or /Yellow to take action.

Type /default to revert to how it was before editing.

7. Arrange Multiple Cards at Once on a Board

As you know, Notion is also replacing Trello. Similar to Trello, you can keep track of projects and status from the dashboard view. Suppose you want to quickly update the status of cards from a board view, simply select all cards once and type Ctrl + / or Cmd + / (macOS) to update their status.

8. Add a Date

The concept allows you to add a date to the end of the block. It helps to keep track of the timeline of the note. Type /date and you can type a specific day such as Today, Tomorrow or next Tuesday.

History

9. Add a Reminder

Notion also works as a task management app. This means it allows adding tasks and reminder functionality. Type /reminder at the end of the block and add a date. Now, it will create a link. Click on it and add time to it. Notion will inform you about this block at that time.

10. Database Shortcuts

The concept is more than just taking notes and to-dos. The company aims to replace Trello and your traditional calendar with additional functionality. You can use the commands below to quickly convert the necessary elements into a page.

Table

/table – inline to add a table to a page

/board – Inline to add Kanban style board to Notion

/calendar – inline to add a calendar to a page

11. Media plugins

You can add different types of media files to a note. As always, Notion’s execution is different. Use /image to add an image, /pdf to add a pdf, /video to integrate any video, etc. in summer. It also supports audio files and documents.
