As the colorful invitation illustration shows, This year’s WWDC 2024 will take place June 10-14. The circular graphic appears to depict Apple Park’s iconic ring-shaped headquarters and suggests that at least some of the event, which has been entirely virtual in recent years, will take place in person in Cupertino.
But the focus will definitely be on major software updates waiting to be announced. The highlight of the event should be the first official presentation of Apple’s new generation smartphone operating system, iOS 18.. Other software announcements are also expected for the company’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset, including iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and potentially “visionOS 2.”
Artificial intelligence should be the star of the event
However, Apple’s focus on artificial intelligence is also expected to attract great attention at WWDC 2024. The company has more or less subtly announced integrations and major advancements towards AI in its applications and marketing campaigns. Improvements to Siri with advanced language models are mostly a simple process at this point.
However, exactly what form Apple’s artificial intelligence move will take remains a great mystery. Some think we’ll see AI-powered photo and video editing tools, text summaries in apps like Mail and Messages, real-time transcriptions in Voice Memos, and more. It is even said that an AI model on the device will keep the computation local for privacy reasons.
Apple It will no doubt seek to differentiate its approach to generative AI from rivals such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. Their devices’ custom neural engines and very tight hardware and software integration could provide an ideal canvas for new AI experiments.
Either way, WWDC 2024 has suddenly become one of Apple’s most anticipated events in years. Beyond annual operating system updates, the company looks poised to embrace AI in a truly big way, for better or worse. As a reminder, Apple has tried to avoid this question for years, even avoiding saying “AI” in public.
