Apple’s new iPhone 6s goes on sale tonight, ahead of its September 25 release date. If you’re planning to buy one of the new iPhones tonight, know that avoiding the 16GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus may be in your best interest.
On Wednesday, Apple took the stage and announced two new iPhone models. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus come with a host of big changes, including new cameras, an improved A9 processor, a more powerful design, a new rose gold color and an improved display. Yet one feature remains the same.
Rather than offering a base model of the 32GB iPhone 6s, the company stuck to three known storage options. Both iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come with 16GB, 64GB or 128GB internal storage.
The 16GB iPhone is once again the cheapest model and will therefore be extremely attractive. You shouldn’t buy it though, not if you can help. Here are a few reasons not to buy the 16GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
Your Space Is Out
Take it from me, I fell into this trap.
I bought the 16GB iPad Air a few years ago. In a few weeks, I was very close to the threshold. Even now I have to delete apps to make room for new files and other apps. It’s a frustrating process and one that I repeat an incredible number of times.
I can’t even imagine having to perform this procedure on an iPhone, a device I use far more than the iPad Air.
I bought the iPhone 6 last year. Before pre-orders started, I decided the 64GB model was perfect for me. The 16GB iPhone 6 wasn’t even an option. Why? Why? Because in a few weeks I would be out of place.
Last year I filled my iPhone 6 with new apps, new music, new photos and new videos. I take tons of photos and videos and I have over 100 apps on my phone. And guess what? I still have 16GB of free space on my iPhone 6.
Not once did I have to worry about my storage. It’s an amazing freedom to have, especially if you’re attached to your phone like me.
I don’t know how you use your iPhone but I guess you will download apps and take pictures and shoot videos. And if you plan to do any of these on the iPhone 6s, you will run out of storage.
New iPhone 6s Features Don’t Make It Easy
The device’s features don’t help make things easier.
The iPhone 6s camera can shoot beautiful 4K video. The thing is, you’ll only be able to pull for a few minutes before your 16GB is completely full.
Early iPhone 6s users discovered One minute of 4K video on the iPhone 6s will take up 375 MB of space on the device.
This means you’ll be able to shoot around 30 minutes of 4K video before the phone is fully charged. And that’s not even counting the other apps and files you have on board. So, it will actually be much less than that.
Even if you don’t plan to shoot tons of 4K content, it would be nice to have the option to shoot more than a few songs at a music festival without completely filling the device. There is more.
Apple’s new Live Photos reportedly taking it twice amount of space as normal photos. If you’re not familiar with Live Photos, it’s one of the coolest features on the iPhone 6s. Here’s how Apple explains it:
A still photograph captures a moment frozen in time. With Live Photos, you can turn these moments into unforgettable vivid memories. At the heart of a Live Photo is a beautiful 12 megapixel photo. But with that photograph, the moments just before and after it were captured were captured by motion and sound.
Good luck if you plan to use Live Photos and shoot 4K video on a 16GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
Buy 64GB iPhone 6s Or…
The 16GB iPhone 6s doesn’t make sense to me. Neither does cents. Not when the 64GB iPhone 6s costs just $100 more on contract and a few dollars cheaper on monthly installment plans.
I’ve been a 64GB iPhone 6 user for a year now and can say without hesitation that it’s definitely worth the extra money. Not just for the extra space, but for the peace of mind that comes with it. 16GB will fill up much faster than you think.
If money is an issue for you, do yourself a favor and check out the 64GB version of the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. They’re cheaper, still great smartphones, and they’ll only get better once the iOS 9 update comes out.
