iPhone 7 Plus battery life lasts all day for many users, but heavy users may struggle throughout the day, so the Scosche iPhone 7 Plus MagicMount PowerBank can help bring some life to the phone. The magnetic aspect of the battery distinguishes it from ordinary external batteries. Scosche sells these for iPhone or iPad with lightning connectors, or other devices that charge via micro-USB or USB-C.
This review covers the iPhone version. Scosche MagicMount Power Bank ($59.99) battery. It comes with a built-in Lightning cable. The MagicMount PowerBank houses a 4,000mAh battery that charges at 2.1 amps. That’s enough battery power to charge the iPhone 7 Plus almost 2 times. It should easily charge the smaller iPhone 7 twice. The iPad will consume more power and probably won’t charge twice, but it should give you at least one full charge.
The package comes with a Scosche MagicMount PowerBank battery and several adhesive-backed magnets. Remove the backing and fix it on the phone to show the adhesive. The PowerBank is then secured to the part that sticks to the iPhone to hold the battery in place. It stays firmly in place until the user pulls it out with some effort.
People who do not feel comfortable sticking magnets to the back of their phone with adhesive should buy a case and stick the magnet to the case. However, I have attached magnets to my phones and you can remove them and clean the remaining glue with rubbing alcohol. As long as you use a very small amount of alcohol on the cloth, it won’t harm your phone.
Scosche MagicMount PowerBank Design
The PowerBank measures about the same thickness as the iPhone 7 Plus. A few inches shorter and maybe an inch or so narrower. Slightly lighter than iPhone. The two together do not feel too heavy to carry in your pocket.
The cable that connects to the iPhone is located next to a button that turns the battery on and off. LED indicators show the battery charge percentage. It also has a micro USB port for charging the battery. The package includes a USB charging cable or an AC to USB adapter that plugs into any USB port on your computer.
On the sides is a pair of pads that touch the phone. This prevents the battery from scratching the back of the phone.
Scosche MagicMount PowerBank Weakness
Scosche MagicMount PowerBank works great. However, Scosche designed the cable to be permanently attached to the battery’s housing, rather than making it removable and replaceable. Why not make the cable so a user can replace the connector and use the battery with multiple devices? I carry an iPhone and another tablet that charges using micro USB. I wish I could buy new cables to attach the battery and use them to charge a phone and then charge the tablet.
Conclusion and recommendation
Scosche MagicMount PowerBank works great. It is convenient to carry it compared to other external mobile battery devices. Many people love battery cases, but this is problematic for several reasons. First, you need to pair it with your phone. What happens if you upgrade your phone? If the new phone is not the same shape and size, you will need to get a new battery case.
Second, battery cases are heavier than typical cases. I don’t always need a battery case. It’s more convenient to carry the PowerBank in my computer bag and only take it out on days when I need extra power or at the end of a long work day, when my phone starts to run out of battery.
