Apple got rid of one of the popular iPhone 6 colors ahead of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus release date of September 25.
Earlier today, Apple took the stage in San Francisco to announce a handful of new products. Among them is an Apple TV 4 and a new 12-inch iPad Pro. The company also confirmed two new iPhone models, including the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus.
Apple will no longer sell the gold iPhone 6, gold iPhone 6 Plus, or gold iPhone 5s. o color options disappeared without a trace earlier today and also without warning. Apple says the change is permanent and that the gold options won’t come back.
While Apple has discontinued the gold versions of the gold iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5s, the models are still available through various retailers and US carriers. At least until stocks last. When stocks run out, gold models will be harder to find and buyers will have to go through vendors to get one.
Apple’s new iPhones will come in three storage sizes (16GB, 64GB, 128GB) and four different colors, including space gray, silver, rose gold, and regular vintage gold.
The company has also quietly stopped selling the 128GB iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus through the online Apple Store. The company currently sells the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 5s, as well as 16GB and 64GB models.
Those who need more storage will have to find a 128GB iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s through a retailer, carrier or dealer.
The good news is that Apple has lowered the price of all three devices. The iPhone 6 will be available at the company’s $550 no-contract price point, the iPhone 6 Plus at the $650 price point and the iPhone 5s at the low-cost price point of $450. You’ll also be able to purchase the gray and silver iPhone 5s from Sprint and Verizon for $0.
Carriers like AT&T have yet to drop the iPhone 6 price, but that should happen once the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus go on sale.
Apple’s new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will take their place at Apple’s flagship price points. The iPhone 6s will command the contract price of $199.99, while the iPhone 6s Plus will occupy the old $299.99 price of the iPhone 6 Plus.
The two new iPhones will ship to all four major carriers in the US later this month, but buyers will be able to order early this weekend.
The iPhone 6s pre-order date will arrive on Saturday, not Friday, and Apple and its partners will open pre-orders from 12:01 AM PST. The company will take pre-orders for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus through its website.
The iPhone 6s release date has been confirmed for September 25 in the United States and many other regions, including China and Canada.
The company says it will launch the iPhone 6s on 400 different carriers in over 100 countries, but the September 25 release date will be limited to a few key markets. Apple should confirm a few more iPhone 6s release dates as we move away from September 25.
