Google announced two new smartphones today. LG-made Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Both have brand new 12.3-megapixel cameras without optical image stabilization, but massive sensors that allow to capture more light, as Google claims, would make them excellent camera phones. And now an independent review already crowned The Nexus 6P is the second best phone camera on the market.
The cameras inside our smartphones are really good these days. Especially on Android phones, the latest flagship devices like the Galaxy Note 5 and LG G4 have beaten the venerable iPhone 6. In fact, the same DXOMARK benchmarking site claims that the Galaxy S6 Edge and Note 5 have the best camera in any smartphone. Better than iPhone 6 and better than LG G4.
Initially, users were indignant when rumors said that the Nexus 5X and 6P lack optical image stabilization and a tiny 12.3-megapixel camera, but megapixels aren’t everything. Today, Google confirmed that these phones have stunning camera technology, and these reports have now been confirmed by at least one reliable source.
DxOMark is a popular website that tests cameras and divides everything into two categories, photo and video. Each part of the camera’s performance receives a point and is rounded for an overall result. Out of all mobile devices, outpacing the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Moto X Pure, LG G4 and others, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is the highest with a score of 86. We hear the Note 5 scores the same or even higher. .
Many will be surprised to learn that the Google Nexus 6P scores 84, right after the Galaxy S6, and ranks second in the ranking of the best smartphone camera. In front of the iPhone 6 and even the LG G4 and its 16-megapixel camera with OIS.
Today, Google silenced all the rumors and revealed that both phones have 12.3-megapixel cameras and don’t hesitate to mention the lack of image stabilization. It’s a feature that most flagship phones have, and it finally arrived on an iPhone earlier this month with the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. It doesn’t seem to matter as much as many think, because the Nexus 6P does pretty well without it.
Google claims its new phones have a camera sensor that’s big enough to not need image stabilization. Capturing more light compensates for minor movements and results in an overall excellent image and highest quality video recording. At first we didn’t really believe these claims, but the above report backs it up. The Nexus 6P (and technically the Nexus 5X) takes #2 on the list. The LG G4 is ahead of the Moto X Pure Edition and many other popular smartphones with higher megapixel cameras.
Above is an image from Google’s announcement, which talks about the size of the sensor in the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. The large 1.55 (1/2.3” type sensor) is even bigger than the original Nexus 6 and the new iPhone 6s Plus, which Apple made a huge splash about. Claiming the new 1.22 um pixel size produces great photos.
We’ve heard good things about the new iPhone 6s camera, and multiple tests show it to be one of the best on the market. Google has definitely surpassed that with the huge 1.55 um pixel size inside its new smartphones. So far we have nothing else to go on apart from DxoMark, but they have been very respected in the past.
They Nexus 6P camera review He goes on to say that the Nexus 6 is excellent when it comes to photos, but video isn’t rated that high, which lowers the overall results. Then the biggest drop came in stabilization, which of course makes sense as there is no optical image stabilization. Only 55 points in stabilization while recording video.
That said, Google’s claims are backed up here, and the larger sensor on board allows the Nexus 6P to take stunning photos, clear videos, and it does so well that it’s ranked second among any smartphone ever released.
What all this means is that the Nexus 5X and 6P will take great pictures. These results should speak for themselves. If potential buyers have any doubts about the cameras inside Google’s new phones, don’t be, because they will apparently perform pretty well.
All-new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, on Google Store today, starting at $379 for the Nexus 5X and $499 for the Nexus 6P due to it having a larger screen, a large battery and an all-aluminum design. Currently, Google is accepting pre-orders and should start shipping before the end of October.
We’ll get our hands on it very soon and we’ll be sure to test the cameras to see how capable they are against all the competition.
