Just in time to hit holiday wish lists, a new Retina 4K iMac could launch in just a few days.
Ever since the big 5K iMac launched last year, customers have been clamoring for Apple to bring their high-resolution Retina display to the smaller model.
Rumors have been swirling for months, but it looks like the release date has finally arrived: according to Mark Gurman 9to5Macnew iMacs will be released next week.
Like the 5K version of the 27-inch iMac, don’t expect the changes to be visible from the outside: Apple will keep the existing body of the 21.5-inch iMac. However, for the premium quality of the 4K model, you can expect 4,096 x 2,304 (we’ve done the math for you, that’s around 219 pixels per inch) and a much more powerful graphics card than current models.
Since it will be installed on a 21.5-inch iMac, the Apple 4K iMac is never user serviceable. Whether it’s a Fusion drive or an SSD, the hard drive is inaccessible and the RAM has no accessible slots (you can theoretically upgrade it, but that’s not easy (unless you’re skilled with screwdrivers and suction cups). This is against 27. Handy for just about anyone to upgrade their RAM -inch iMac with one panel.
It looks like the company will introduce the models with a simple press release and little fanfare. It is not yet known whether Apple will simultaneously update the 27-inch model with new internal components; However, a new wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse with Force Touch could appear.
