Moshi symbus Review: Impressive USB C Dock for MacBook Pro

Moshi symbus is a small USB C dock that lets you connect your Mac to a monitor and other accessories with a single connection to your Mac. Symbus works with 12-inch MacBook, 13-inch MacBook Pro and 15-inch MacBook Pro and even charges your MacBook while you use it.

Users will appreciate price of $124.95 Moshi symbus, which has about half the price of many docks without cutting out a ton of features. With this setup, you can quickly connect to a monitor, wired internet connection, hard drives, and other USB accessories with a single connection to your MacBook. This is particularly useful on the 12-inch MacBook with limited USB C ports and the 13-inch MacBook without the TouchBar, but quite useful on Macs with more connections.

With moshi symbus, users get the following connections that allow you to connect to various devices with a single cable.

One of the USB-A Ports does 2.1A fast charging to let you quickly charge your phone with this connection, but we mainly used it to connect it to hard drives and other accessories we need while at the desk. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack in the dock. This means we have to connect it directly to the MacBook Pro. One more thing we need to disconnect before this goes mobile. It’s not a deal breaker, especially at this price, but we would love to have this USB C slot included in a second-gen version.

Connect all your accessories to MacBook Pro with Moshi symbus and one cable.

We use Moshi simbus to connect our 2016 MacBook Pro 15 inch to 34 inch Ultrawide Monitor, various hard drives, card readers and accessories with a single cable. We have connected our Monitor’s USB hub to Moshi USB C slot so that we can connect other hard drives and accessories. This allows you to use more than two USB devices with MacBook and symbus slot. We have two hard drives, a card reader and a webcam connected to it. Moshi offers a free USB C Dock utility on the Mac App Store that can automatically eject hard drives before unplugging them, so you can safely remove your storage before switching to mobile.

One of the only downsides to using symbus with a 15-inch MacBook Pro is that it charges slower than using the 87W MacBook Pro USB C adapter that came with your MacBook. For the price, this is a compromise that many users will be willing to accept. It depends on how quickly you need to top up while using your MacBook Pro. Most of the time we will be working there for hours when we connect at home. If we need to charge faster, we can connect the Apple charger.

It’s a small dock that doesn’t take up much space on your desk. You can even mount it behind a monitor using 3M strips if you want a super clean install that hides your cables. The USB C cable to your MacBook is about two feet long and is not a replacement cable. If you need a longer cable, you should be able to use an extension cable. The USB C slot looks very nice in polished aluminum and has an LED on the front that lets you know your charging status.

moshi simbus Offers great value for $124.95 It’s the perfect choice for users who need to connect their MacBook and MacBook Pro to a single monitor and a range of accessories. There are USB C slots with more ports and dual display support, but they are more expensive. For many users, the Moshi symbus is the perfect mix of ports, features and price.
