Apple is reportedly trying to integrate wireless connectivity directly into its in-house chips to fix one of the biggest flaws in its laptops. thus allowing their MacBooks to connect to 5G networks. As Mark Gurman reports in the Power On newsletter, this aims to give users Internet access without relying on Wi-Fi. thus aligning the functionality of MacBooks with those of iPhones and Apple Watches.
According to Gurman, the MacBook’s wireless chip will be an internal component integrated directly into the M-series processors, which will be an addition that many users will appreciate. It will finally allow Apple to catch up with Windows PCs. In fact, many laptops already offer this functionality.
Despite its obvious delay, Apple wasn’t always this way. The concept of wireless connectivity in MacBooks dates back to 2008, when Steve Jobs explored the idea of adding 3G connectivity. However, the project was abandoned due to space constraints for the required chips. By miniaturizing the chip, integrating a wireless modem into Apple’s processors by 2028 could finally solve the mass problems that have hindered the idea in the past.
Currently, the only way to browse the web without a Wi-Fi connection on a MacBook is to use the iPhone 5G connection. By integrating this functionality directly into their chips, Apple will therefore be able to allow users to do this without their smartphones.
Now it is not yet known what the performance of this homemade 5G modem will be and whether it will be at the same level as its competitors. We also hope that Apple will move ahead of the schedule announced by Mark Gurman, because otherwise that would mean we’d have to wait almost 5 years to see 5G coming to MacBooks.
