Thinking of abandoning your current phone for the iPhone SE or the rumored iPhone SE 2? Or thinking of replacing your iPhone SE with iPhone SE 2? If you are, there are a few things you should know as you make your way to Apple’s first hardware release window.
If you want an iPhone but aren’t particularly interested in a big screen, you have a few options. You can find a cheap iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c on the used market, but we don’t recommend it. Devices are stuck on iOS 10 and performance started to degrade for many users in iOS 10.3.
iPhone 5s may sound tempting. It’s inexpensive and runs iOS 11. The problem is, it probably won’t get iOS 12. If that happens, it will miss the next big set of features, security updates, bug fixes, and new emojis.
That leaves the upgraders with two legitimate options, the current iPhone SE (if you don’t already have it) and the rumored iPhone SE 2.
iPhone SE 2 rumors have been swirling for several months now, and release date rumors point to one of three potential windows for the highly anticipated device.
Nothing has been confirmed, but today we want to get upgraders and iPhone SE users everything we know at the moment about the iPhone SE 2 release date, price, specs and more. As we close the first window, we’ll help you catch up and set appropriate expectations.
When Can You Upgrade to iPhone SE 2?
If you’re looking to upgrade your current device (iPhone SE or something) to another small screen iPhone, this year might be your luck.
iPhone SE 2 rumors have repeatedly pointed to a release in 2018. However, most of these rumors are coming from supply chain sources and hit-hit records. numbers. So it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that iPhone SE 2 release date rumors are all over the place.
Although they agreed on a release in 2018, they cannot agree on a window. Some sources claim that the iPhone SE 2 will launch in Apple’s spring launch window, while others claim that the device will arrive around WWDC 2018.
The only reliable source on the subject is respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, casts doubt on these iPhone SE 2 rumors and claims that Apple doesn’t have enough “development resources” to release a new iPhone SE this year.
Kuo believes that if it can somehow release a device this year, the launch will happen later in the year, around the same time Apple launches the new iPhone 11. So what does this mean for those looking to upgrade?
That means you can’t count on Apple to deliver a new iPhone SE in 2018. There are many reasons to wait for a potential launch, but many of you should start looking at alternatives.
iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE: Design
The exterior of the iPhone SE is almost identical to the iPhone 5s. It’s a solid design, but it went out of style with the release of the iPhone X and iPhone 8. The iPhone SE 2 could change that.
sloppy Chinese iPhone SE 2 rumor claims that the device will come with a classic design and a larger screen. However, multiple report devices claim will come with some design upgrades Including wireless charging and rear glass, both borrowed from the iPhone X and iPhone 8.
As of now, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X are the only iPhones that can charge in the wireless charging dock.
While numerous rumors point to an overhauled design, Kuo believes the iPhone SE 2 will be a modest upgrade over the current model.
If Apple wants to keep the cost of the iPhone SE 2 low, it probably won’t turn the device into a miniature version of the iPhone X.
That said, Apple is a company that loves to please its customers, so anyone who wants a 4-inch iPhone has a chance to please.
iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE: Camera
The current iPhone SE takes excellent photos and videos for a two-year-old phone.
It comes with a 12 MP rear camera, 5x digital zoom, burst mode, Live Photos, Auto HDR and face detection giving photographers and a host of options. The iPhone SE also captures 1080p HD video at 30fps or 60fps.
If you like taking selfies or answering FaceTime video calls on your phone, the 1.2 megapixel front camera is at your service.
The iPhone SE 2 is said to have some upgrades, which makes sense because Apple is always installing upgraded sensors on new iPhone models.
A sketchy rumor claims The iPhone SE 2 will come with the iPhone 7’s 12 MP sensor and the iPhone 6’s 5 MP front camera. If this works, it would be a pretty big upgrade.
So far, we haven’t heard or seen any credible rumors that Face ID will replace Touch ID on the iPhone SE 2. Again, if Apple wants to keep the cost of the device down, we probably won’t see Apple bring the iPhone Xs. TrueDepth Camera system up to 4-inch form factor.
iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE: Processor
The performance of the iPhone SE continues to impress us as we move towards the release of iOS 12 and the device’s second birthday. We continue to get solid battery life and the device easily handles iOS 11.
The iPhone SE 2 rumors are unsurprisingly pointing to some upgrades. one sketchy rumor Claims it could have the same A10 processor found in the iPhone 7 and other devices claims It will have 2 GB RAM with A10 Fusion processor. In the real world, this means better battery life, fast phone and improved gaming.
If Apple does release an iPhone SE 2, it probably won’t share the same processor as the previous model.
iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE: Software
iPhone SE runs iOS 11 and works fine. Given its age, we expect it to get iOS 11 and iOS 12, and there’s an outside chance it will get iOS 13 as well.
As for the iPhone SE 2, it will run the latest version of iOS out of the box. Be it iOS 11.3, iOS 12 or any other version. But that’s not the point.
The point is that the iPhone SE 2 will have several years on the iPhone SE, which means it will last longer. Apple usually updates phones for four years before stopping support.
iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE: Price
The iPhone SE is much cheaper than it once was, making it an intriguing option for those looking to upgrade from an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s without breaking the bank. As we dig deeper into the year towards an iPhone 11 release, we only expect it to be cheaper.
We haven’t heard anything reliable about the price of the iPhone SE 2, but if Apple uses it as a replacement for the iPhone SE, it will likely replace the iPhone SE at its current ($349) or previous price point ($399).
What To Do If Apple Doesn’t Release iPhone SE 2?
If Apple doesn’t manage to launch the iPhone SE 2 in the spring or summer, and there’s a good chance of that, you’ll definitely have to look elsewhere.
There are a ton of alternatives out there. If you want a really small screen, you have devices like the Sony Xperia X Compact and Moto E4. You also have inexpensive devices like the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, both of which are excellent options, and the Samsung Galaxy S8.
You may also want to consider waiting for the iPhone 11. According to Kuo, Apple is working on three iPhones for the fall, none of which will feature a 4-inch display.
While the 5.8-inch successor to the iPhone X and the 6.5-inch iPhone X ‘Plus’ might be too big or expensive for your taste, the company’s 6.1-inch LCD iPhone model is an interesting alternative to the iPhone SE and iPhone SE 2.
Kuo believes it will come with a few major hardware upgrades at the fairly affordable $649-749 price point. By comparison, the cheapest iPhone X is $1,000 and the iPhone X Plus is expected to have an even higher price tag.
