iPhone 15: New cameras could fix smartphone’s biggest flaw in photos

Nikkei sources have detailed information about the photo part of the iPhone 15s, Apple’s new generation high-end smartphones. Apple’s next device reportedly has Sony’s newest image sensorand the latter will be at the cutting edge of technology.

Sony’s Semiconductor Solutions division has reportedly already developed its new image sensor, which it will manufacture at its Nagasaki plant, and will begin shipping to Apple and other smartphone manufacturers next year. Thanks to him, Apple smartphones Compete with the best android devices of 2023.

iPhone 15 should be better at low-light photos

According to Nikkei, Sony’s new sensors can contain more photodiodes, thanks to a semiconductor architecture that places photodiodes and transistors in separate layers.

Allegedly this would catch better portraits even in strong background lightbecause the saturation signal in each pixel will double compared to standard sensors.

Therefore, the next iPhone 15 should benefit from significant improvements in terms of low-light photos and will also be able to better manage underexposure and overexposure. The dynamic range of the sensor will also be higher than in previous generations. This could allow Apple to fix one of the biggest problems with its smartphones.

The higher the dynamic range of the sensor, the less the smartphone has to resort to software tricks to achieve a satisfactory result. It’s not unusual to find this iPhones can’t handle accurate colors well in some shots taken outdoorsand especially the color of the sky. In some cases, the latter is completely lit (white), which forces the software to strongly correct the image.

Apple will likely use Sony’s new sensors for the iPhone 15’s primary rear camera. It is unclear whether the entire iPhone 15 series will receive these sensors or whether the upgrade will be exclusive to the high-end iPhone 15 Pro series. We also recall that the latter will be the first Apple smartphone to use a periscope sensor.
