iPhone 11: 8 Things You Should Do First

What should you do when you have finished unboxing your new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro? Before you start using your new iPhone, there are many minor setup options to work on.

Even if you’re restoring from an iCloud backup or using the new transfer tool to simplify the process, there are some options you’ll want to make sure you enable, even if you missed them during the initial setup. Here are the first things you should do when you get a new iPhone 11;

Set Up Face ID

Face ID uses a front-facing camera to unlock your iPhone using your face. This is incredibly useful and something you need to set up. If you skipped this during the initial setup process, now is the time to set it up. This adapts to changes in your view, but you can also set an alternate view if needed.

Set Up Apple Wallet

Set up Apple Pay to always have payment options at hand.

Apple Wallet lets you tap your phone to supported credit card readers to pay. This is easy to do once you have it set up, but you will want to do this setup at home before you need it. I love it for when I accidentally left my wallet at home.

From there, follow the onscreen instructions to verify the card and add it to your phone. This varies from bank to bank or card to card. While not all cards work with Apple Pay, most are now compatible in the US You can keep tickets, rewards cards, and other items in the wallet.

Install Latest Updates

Your iPhone 11 comes with iOS 13, but there may be another update when you turn it on. Sometimes the iPhone lets you install it during setup, but if not, it’s a good time to make sure your iPhone is up to date.

Optimize Battery Charge

iPhone supports a new feature to optimize the long-term health of your iPhone battery. This essentially keeps your iPhone at 80% until it realizes you need to use it, and before that time the iPhone waits to charge.

1. Go to settings.
2. Tap on Battery.
3. Tap on Battery Health.
4. Turn on Optimize Battery Charge.

This sounds like a bad feature if you want battery life all the time, but as iPhone has learned, it will deliver a fully charged phone when you need it, without any long-term damage to the iPhone.

Learn Tactile Touch

Apple no longer offers 3D Touch, but there is a new Haptic Touch option. It’s a bit like a longer or harder pressure, but takes a minute to get used to. Try it in any app.

This will at least give you the option to share the app or rearrange the apps. This is just the beginning. In many apps, you can use it to launch options, access favorites, or trigger an option.

I use this with the Apollo app to jump to certain subreddits, the phone app to quickly search for favorites, and others. You can even tactile the spacebar and then use the keyboard as a cursor.

Turn on Dark Mode

The new Dark Mode in iOS 13 is great to use on iPhone. It makes it easier to use iPhone at night and many apps now support this feature so it will be ported to those apps.

Block Unknown Callers

Block unknown callers with ease.

Your iPhone has a new Mute Unknown Caller feature to help keep unwanted calls from interrupting your day. While the name might make you think it only blocks calls that say “unknown” when a call comes in, it actually blocks any calls that aren’t in your contacts or that Siri can find in Mail or Messages.

When you turn this on, you may want to add your Doctors and other offices that call you so you can receive these calls without going to voicemail. You should also set up your voicemail to handle legitimate blocked calls.

Open Upgraded Videos

Get the best video possible from your iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro.

iPhone camera does not automatically save videos at maximum resolution and frame rate. You probably don’t want to record 4K at 60fps because it takes up a lot of space. However, if you want the ability to crop video and make 1080P video without sacrificing quality, or if you want super smooth ultra-wide video, this is a feature you should turn on.
