As every year, one of the biggest parts of the keynote was iOS. Apple introduced the 18th version of the iPhone operating system. It’s a version that’s already available in beta for developers and will benefit from public beta in July, certainly in line with the commercial launch of the iPhone 16, before going into global distribution this fall. iOS 18 is an improved version of ‘iOS 17’. Understand that the basics remain. But some new things are coming that will improve daily life.
These new functions are many. And only around fifteen presentations were made by Apple during the keynote. Some are important but long overdue. This applies, for example, to RCS format support for messages. The format is already supported by Android. Now it’s time for Apple to integrate this too. But other new features will really have an impact on the daily lives of iPhone owners. Here are our five favorites.
1 – Photo app
The Photos app benefits from a new design with a single home screen. At the top you have your photo library for quick reference. At the bottom you have your albums as well as dynamic and customizable filters. The idea is to be able to find photos faster and sort them smarter… without having to waste time doing it.
2 – Messages app
In 2023, Apple introduced many new features to the Messages application. Integration of new information, especially for conversations. This year, Apple continues to improve Messages with a variety of new features. Text effects to bring messages to life. Almost unlimited variety for emoji reactions. Just like in a word processor, you can bold, italicize, underline, or strike through text. And you can schedule a message to be sent. 3 – Control Center
The control center is improving with iOS 18. You already had the opportunity to add or remove virtual buttons from the center according to your needs and connected devices. Now you can categorize them, move them around and even enlarge them. Apple has also created an API for developers to create their own virtual buttons that will appear in Control Center.
4 – New filters in Mail
Gmail from Google is a very powerful email manager. And one of the most useful functions is the automatic classification of incoming messages. Promotion. Social networks. E-commerce. Apple is taking this good idea (specifically categories) and integrating it into the native iOS 18 Mail app, which will automatically classify emails. You can also create filters by sender that will summarize all purchases.
5 – hidden and locked apps
The last new feature that seems important to us: locked and hidden apps. This functionality is not new to the Android ecosystem, as some interfaces have been offering it for several years. It’s now coming to iOS too. The goal is the same: hide and/or block an app for the casual user of your phone. FaceID/TouchID and Passcode can be used to view and unlock it. This is particularly practical for professional or banking applications, for example.
Obviously that’s not all. iOS 18 is packed with other new features.
