iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 may bring this big change, but Apple won’t advertise it

WWDC 2023 will take place from June 5-9. Throughout its high developer base, Apple should offer new versions of all operating systems. According to Bloomberg, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will not radically change a well-tested formula. As a result, iPhones and iPads will only benefit from improvements to Dynamic Island, and especially accessibility, that will “fulfill a certain number of user requests”. Nothing really clear under the sun for Apple OS? iOS 17 will introduce one more important feature than meets the eye: the possibility of “side-installing” apps in competing stores.

Apple has always refused to download and install apps from alternative stores.. By 2021, Tim Cook was so reluctant to the idea that he didn’t hesitate to recommend adopting the rival platform “if sideloading is that important to you.” Indeed, many choose Android for its “openness” and customization possibilities. However, keep in mind that Google does not give absolute freedom to users, because Android 14 will block the installation of apps that are no longer updated.

Apple will prepare the possibility of sideloading apps on iPhone with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17

EU digital markets legislation will enter into force in 2024and will require Apple to facilitate access to competing stores. According to the Cupertino company, the verdict is clear, even if giving iPhone users the ability to download from sources other than the App Store means exposing its ecosystem to malware, ransomware and cybercrime. App Store monopoly ends.

No details have been filtered yet regarding the sideloading implementation in iOS 17. We’ll have to wait until now to find out more: WWDC to take place from 5 to 9 June 2023. The highlight of this annual event will likely be the presentation of Apple’s first AR/VR headset.
