iOS 18 will be announced by Apple during WWDC, and we already know that this update will be largely devoted to the integration of new features related to generative AI. Some users may fear systematic AI intervention being imposed on them in their daily use of their iPhone, but Apple should allow those who want to do without it.
According to this BloombergThe AI functions that come with iOS 18, which are mostly very well informed, will not be mandatory. The user will even need to give explicit permission to use ChatGPT and other AI options. If you don’t want your iPhone to be constantly connected to the OpenAI cloud, you can disable it.
ChatGPT will be optional on iPhones running iOS 18
This decision was made after heated discussions within Apple itself. Some executives at the firm opposed the inclusion of ChatGPT on the iPhone, believing that a chatbot that gave bad advice or gave incorrect answers could tarnish the company’s reputation. Others were philosophically opposed to the idea of a chatbot in Apple software. Having to confirm the activation of AI on your device is a way of splitting the pear in half.
Apple developed its own language model, but it was not deemed efficient enough. In order to provide the best chatbot experience to its users, the company had to enter into a partnership with OpenAI to provide access to ChatGPT. Negotiations were also held with Google to bring Gemini to the iPhone.
Apple’s language model still needs to be used in iOS 18. This will be used for Siri and to support AI functions in certain native apps. Most importantly, unlike ChatGPT, it will run locally. In the future, Apple aims to develop its own technology to completely eliminate third-party services.
