Among the many new features that will come with iOS 16 is the long-awaited ability to edit and delete Messages after sending them. While some apps like WhatsApp are still resisting, most popular messaging systems already offer this feature. Suffice it to say that this update is therefore welcome for all users. However, this imposes some limitations.
In theory, the functionality would like it to be possible to edit or delete the message within 15 minutes of sending it without the recipient noticing (in case they haven’t opened the conversation yet). In fact, this only applies to users themselves on iOS 16. Indeed, all those left on a previous version of the OS will get a second message.
Editing Messages only works on iOS 16
So if you edit a Message sent to a user in iOS 15 for example, that will get the modified version in a separate Message, thus removing all the usefulness of the functionality. Additionally, this second message will even be assigned the word “Changed” for some obscure reason, as it will be visible to say the least. It is not yet known whether Apple plans to fix this issue.
The first public beta of iOS 16 will be available the week of July 11th. You can then test this feature and all the other new features yourself, provided your iPhone is compatible. Meanwhile, the final launch will be this fall. Actually, keep in mind that editing and deleting messages only works for iPhone conversations and not for Android users.
