The iOS 11 release date has been confirmed for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and is scheduled to roll down shortly after Apple begins taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
As expected, Apple announced a number of new products at its fall launch event. These include the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X (also known as iPhone 10), a new Apple Watch 3, and a new Apple TV. The company also used this event to confirm the release dates for upcoming software updates that include macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, tvOS 11, and iOS 11.
iOS 11 is the next operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and will replace iOS 10 next week.
Apple has finally announced an official iOS 11 release date, and the update will roll out to all compatible devices starting September 19.
This comes a few days after iPhone 8 pre-orders (September 15) and a few days before the company launches iOS 11-powered flagships in the United States and countries around the world (September 22).
The iOS 11 release date falls a few weeks before the company puts the new iPhone X release date on sale. The iPhone X won’t go on sale until October 27 and won’t be on the shelves anywhere until November 3. This is unusual for an iPhone, but the iPhone X is not your typical iPhone.
Fortunately, owners of older iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models won’t have to wait until then to get iOS 11 and its new features.
The iOS 11 update is set to deliver a long list of features, improvements, fixes, and patches to devices like the iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, and iPad Pro. The company’s iPad iOS 11 update is particularly robust, boasting new Apple Pencil features and a brand new dock for apps located at the bottom of the home screen.
Other iOS 11 features include Siri upgrades with voice translation, a new Control Center, screen recording, improvements to various first-party apps including Podcasts and Apple Music, and more.
Apple hasn’t been able to confirm an official iOS 11 release time on stage, but we expect the company to stick with the standard release protocol, which calls for a release at and around 10:00 PM Pacific.
The company’s major upgrades are often plagued with problems as iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners around the world scramble to install the new software. Those who want to avoid download problems and errors should wait a few hours before installing the iOS 11 update.
One feature that iOS 11 won’t have at launch is the new emoji characters that Apple confirmed earlier this year. Apple says the new emoji will come in an update later this year; which means we should see an iOS 11.1 update in beta shortly after the initial iOS 11 release.
