Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock Review

Within a few months of the Apple Watch’s launch, tons of accessories hit the market, especially charging stations of all kinds. That said, Apple recently released its own charging dock for the Apple Watch. These are my thoughts on it so far.

Apple’s Magnetic Charging Dock for the Apple Watch may have been late to the party when it launched in November – exactly six months after the Apple Watch’s initial launch, but as with everything Apple has released, its new dock immediately rose to the top of the charts with a take to get it. The new dock is an interesting accessory in terms of design, especially since it doesn’t look like an Apple product. There’s no sleek aluminum anywhere, but it uses Apple’s iconic white finish all over.

The dock is slightly smaller than a CD and is covered on all sides with a felt-like material, except for the center where the magnetic charger is located. You can put your Apple Watch in the slot to charge, which provides a nice and elegant look by centering the Apple Watch case in the slot.

Also, the magnetic charger can open up to a 90 degree angle and be perpendicular to the dock, similar to opening a floor hatch door. This allows you to charge your Apple Watch and support it to act as a kind of bedside clock, activating Nightstand Mode, which dimly displays the time of the clock as the clock charges.

The charging dock comes with a 2-meter Lightning cable that plugs directly into the dock. This means that unlike most Apple Watch docking stations, the magnetic charging section is built into the dock and you have to plug any Lightning cables into the Lightning connector on the side of the dock.

I think that’s a huge feature of this docking station and makes it pretty portable in a way, so if you’re going on vacation, you can leave the Apple Watch charging cable at home and just pack the docking station instead. The Lightning cable and wall adapter your iPhone already took with you.

Unfortunately, the dock doesn’t come with a power adapter, so you’ll have to use the one that came with your Apple Watch, or you can use the one that came with your iPhone as it’s the same charger.

One thing I wish the dock could do is rotate around the magnetic charging piece after you flip it over, so you can point it in any direction without having to rotate the whole dock, which gives you your own. The clock face points in your direction while keeping the dock and Lightning cable in the same position.

However, it remains static and I guess this kind of ability will raise the price quite a bit. The pier is already pretty expensive at $80 and most people I asked said they wouldn’t buy it for that price.

Still, it can be a great accessory to put on your Christmas list because it’s still a great product worth using, but the price is something that might kick back a bit.

I think most users should look the other way if they want to buy an Apple Watch dock, as you can get pretty good ones for less than $30. Apple’s own slot is really nice and all, but probably not worth spending $80.
