5 Things to Know About iOS 14.8.1 Update

Apple has sent a new iOS 14.8.1 update to iPhone users.

If you still have a compatible iPhone running iOS 14, iOS 14.8.1 is now available to install. iOS 14.8 is compatible with all phones running iOS 14, a list including: iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro MaxiPhone SE2, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Proand iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Unlike the previous version of iOS 14, iOS 14.8.1 is a minor maintenance upgrade and brings security improvements to iPhone owners. There are no new features on board.

iOS 14.8.1 Issues

iOS 14.8.1 is causing issues for some iPhone users. Some issues are new, others are gone from iOS 14.8 and older versions of iOS.

The current list of iOS 14 issues includes installation issues, lag, Exchange issues, issues with first and third party apps, hotspot issues, touchscreen issues, calendar spam, issues with Touch ID and Face ID, random stuttering and charging issues .

Apple not signing in iOS 14.8; this means that if iOS 14.8.1 causes problems, you cannot downgrade your phone to the previous iOS 14 version. You also cannot downgrade from iOS 14.8.

Keep this in mind if you’re having a good experience on iOS 14.8 or lower. Once you upgrade to iOS 14.8.1, you cannot go back.

iOS 14.8.1 Update: What’s New

iOS 14.8.1 is a very minor update and focused on security. There are 12 security patches on board.

iOS 14.8.1 Jailbreak

developer teams behind checkra1n and UnC0ver jailbreaking tools have released versions compatible with newer versions of iOS 14, but only Checkra1n (currently in beta) is compatible with iOS 14.5. They do not yet support iOS 14.8.1, iOS 14.8, iOS 14.7.1, iOS 14.7, iOS 14.6 or iOS 14.5.1.

The latest version of unC0ver is compatible with newer iPhones including the iPhone 12 series. This is great news if you’ve been waiting to jailbreak your new phone. Unfortunately it is only compatible with versions up to iOS 14.3.

There is no way to downgrade your phone to iOS 14.3 or earlier; this means you are out of luck if you upgrade or have already upgraded to iOS 14.8.1, iOS 14.8, iOS 14.7.1, iOS 14.7, iOS. 14.6, iOS 14.5.1, iOS 14.5, iOS 14.4.2, iOS 14.4.1 or iOS 14.4.

Apple is allowing iPhone users to stay on iOS 14 so you can bypass the company’s new iOS 15 operating system. iOS 15 brings a lot of improvements and most iPhone users will want to upgrade.

If you decide to stay on iOS 14, Apple will release the new iOS 14 software, but the change logs will likely be limited to bug fixes and security patches.
