5 Things to Know About iOS 12.0.1 Update

Apple is releasing the first update for the iOS 12 operating system and the iOS 12.0.1 update brings bug fixes for some issues plaguing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

After waiting a bit, Apple is finally releasing a new version of iOS 12. Called iOS 12.0.1, this is a minor maintenance release for all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models that can run Apple’s new operating system.

The iOS 12 update is much smaller than the initial release of iOS 12, but it’s still an important release. The update comes with several major bug fixes, including one for a common iPhone XS charging issue.

In this guide to the iOS 12.0.1 update, we’ll tell you the most important things to know as you move away from the release date.

The walkthrough includes a look at the known changes of the iOS 12.0.1 update, iOS 12.0.1 issues, the performance of iOS 12.0.1 and what’s next for iOS 12 users.

iOS 12.0.1 Reviews

The iOS 12.0.1 update is a very minor download for iOS 12 users. If you’re currently using iOS 12.0, you’re looking at a 75+MB download. If your device is connected to a high-speed Wi-Fi network, you should be able to download the iOS 12.0.

Once the download is complete, the installation shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to complete. It took about five minutes on the iPhone X and iPhone XS and about seven minutes on the iPhone 5s.

If you’re currently using iOS 11, you can expect your download and installation to take much longer. Features, enhancements, and fixes from iOS 12.0 are included in your iOS 12.0.1 update.

We’ve been running the iOS 12.0.1 update on a few devices for a few weeks now, and here are some of our first thoughts on iOS 12.0.1 and its performance.

If you are dealing with iOS 12 issues, you should install the iOS 12.0.1 update right now. If you’re having a good experience with the first release of iOS 12, you may want to wait for long-term feedback.

iOS 12.0.1 Update: What’s New

The iOS 12.0.1 update’s changelog is small and comes with two security patches for potential lock screen vulnerabilities and a few bug fixes for iPhone XS and iOS 12 issues:

Note that a few highly anticipated iOS 12 features are missing.

Apple pulled the new Group FaceTime calls feature out of the iOS 12 beta a few weeks ago, but the feature will arrive in the iOS 12.1 update this fall.

The new emoji characters that Apple promised with iOS 12 are also missing. The new emojis are also available in the iOS 12.1 beta and will be released with the final version of the update this fall.

iOS 12.0.1 Issues

The iOS 12.0.1 update has not gone through a beta process and the issues have shifted to the final version.

We’ve been hearing complaints about download issues, battery draining, Wi-Fi connectivity issues, Bluetooth issues, and problems with Face ID.

If you’re noticing iOS 12.0.1 issues on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll want to take a look at our list of fixes for the most common iOS 12 issues. We’ve also posted tips for improving iOS 12 performance and some tips for improving iOS 12 battery life.

If you can’t stand the performance of iOS 12.0.1 on your device, you’re stuck until Apple releases a new version of iOS 12.

Apple no longer signs out on iOS 12.0 which means you can no longer downgrade your device to the previous version of iOS 12.

Unfortunately, there’s also no way to go back to iOS 11.

iOS 12.0.1 Jailbreak

The developers haven’t released a publicly available iOS 12 jailbreak tool, and it could be weeks before we see one.

As of now, the only way to jailbreak a device running iOS is to run an older version of iOS 11. Unfortunately, there is no way to downgrade from iOS 12.0.

We’ve seen an iOS 12 jailbreak proof-of-concept (and some fake products) emerge, so those of you interested in jailbreaking your device should start looking for fakes as the year progresses. We’ll probably see a few more.

For now, jailbreak users need to skip iOS 12.0.1 and stay on previous versions of iOS 11. For more information on jailbreaking, check out our iOS 12 jailbreak guide.

what’s next

Apple may be working on iOS 12.0.2 but has not confirmed the release. An iOS 12.0.2 update seems highly unlikely at this point.

Currently, the only known update in Apple’s pipeline is the iOS 12.1 update, which is scheduled to be released later this year. We expect it to be released around the end of October or the beginning of November.

The iOS 12.1 update is currently in beta for all iOS 12 powered devices and we expect it to offer a nice mix of new features, bug fixes and security patches.
