5 Things to Know About iOS 11.2 Update

The iOS 11.2 update introduces Apple Pay Cash, faster wireless charging for iPhone X and iPhone 8, and a long list of improvements and bug fixes for issues plaguing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple’s second milestone iOS 11 update is live after a surprise release on Saturday, December 2 on Midnight Pacific. Apple usually releases new iOS updates around 10:00 PM Pacific throughout the week.

Unlike iOS 11.1.2, Apple’s latest version comes with changes to all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch variants. And that means it’s a huge download for all iOS 11 supported devices.

If you’re upgrading from iOS 11.1.2, you’re looking at a pretty important update. iPhone X’s iOS 11.2 update is 430.7 MB, while iPhone 7’s iOS 11.2 update is 409.9 MB.

Those coming from iOS 11.1.2 to the iOS 11.2 update will get the smallest download, while those coming from older versions of iOS 11 or iOS 10 will see a much larger download because of the updates you missed. The features and fixes in these updates are added to your iOS 11.2 release.

Apple usually releases iOS updates around 10:00 Monday-Friday, so on Saturday night, iOS 11.2 version suddenly appeared.

If you are connected to high-speed Wi-Fi, it will take a few moments to download iOS 11.2. It took about four minutes on the iPhone X and about three and a half minutes on the iPhone 7. The download will take a little longer.

On both devices, the setup took about six minutes to complete on the iPhone X and iPhone 7. We recommend spending at least 10 minutes watching the download and installation.

If you’re migrating your devices from an older version of iOS 11, you can expect longer download times and a longer install. Again, this is because you will be getting features from previous versions of iOS.

We are running iOS 11.2 on iPhone X, iPhone 7, iPhone 6 and many other iPhone models. We are also using iOS 11.2 on iPad. We’ve been using the update for a few days now and here are some quick thoughts on its performance.

We did not notice any serious or abnormal battery drain on the trio of devices. That may still change in the coming days, but iOS 11.2 has mostly treated our devices well.

Connectivity (LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) is strong and reliable on all our devices. Wi-Fi download and upload speeds are normal, we were able to connect devices to Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and our cellular networks are working fine.

The iPhone X and iPhone 7 are fast, but we noticed lag on the iPhone 6, iPhone 5s and some iPad models we have.

We haven’t encountered any major issues with our core apps, which include Asana, Slack, YouTube, Spotify, Dark Sky, Chrome, Gmail, and Podcasts. None of them crashed.

As of now, iOS 11.2 feels stable on iPhone X and iPhone 7 and a bit laggy on iPhone 6 and others.

We haven’t noticed any catastrophic issues (tons of random reboots, bricking, etc), but you’ll want to be careful if you’re using an older device or running an older version of iOS. iOS 11.2 is a huge update and can have a huge impact on your device’s performance.

iOS 11.2: What’s New

Apple rushed the iOS 11.2 update to fix a date bug in iOS 11.1.2 that caused some devices to crash. That’s why the update was released on Saturday, not weekdays.

iOS 11.2 fixes more than just the date change bug. It includes a fix for the iOS calculator bug, Apple TV playback from Control Center, and a new animation when tapping the top-right corner of the music panel in Control Center.

There are also a few cosmetic changes, including new camera emojis and some changes to Animojis. It also includes three new Live wallpapers for iPhone X. The wallpapers are taken from Apple’s ‘It’s Here’ ad.

iOS 11.2 also introduces Apple’s Apple Pay Cash platform. The feature, which Apple announced earlier this year, lets you send and receive money from the Messages app on iPhones.

Apple Pay Cash is available for US-based customers only and requires an iOS device with two-factor authentication set up via Apple ID in 11.2.

Apple has also made the Control Center gesture more prominent with a UI change. If you’re on the phone’s lock screen, you’ll see a small bar just below the icons on the right side of the device’s screen. This lets you know the Control Center is there. There is no bar on the home screen.

As you can see in the screenshot above, tapping one of these toggles for the first time in iOS 11.2 brings up a message. Messages explains why Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turn back on after disabling them from Control Center.

These messages will appear once, but now you’ll also get “Disconnecting Nearby Wi-Fi Networks” or “Disconnecting Bluetooth Devices Until Tomorrow” messages at the top of the screen.

To permanently disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you still need to go to the Settings app and turn them off manually.

The iOS 11.2 update also supports 7.5W faster charging from Qi-Based wireless charging accessories. iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus currently charge at 5 watts on iOS 11.1.2.

Apple has also updated the TV app with a new Sports section and is accessible on devices running iOS 11.2 and tvOS 11.2.

The Sports section of the TV app lets you watch live sports matches via ESPN. As of now, ESPN is the only one offering content, but that may change in the future.

Jailbreak users should avoid iOS 11.2 update.
