The latest OS X El Capitan update is available and is a major upgrade for many users. Unlike minor patches, the OS X 10.11 update is a big leap forward with new features and system-wide changes.

There are many reasons to install OS X El Capitan, there are also some reasons to skip the OS X 10.11 update and stay on OS X Yosemite. This advice is in effect almost a year after the OS X El Capitan release date as Apple prepares a new macOS Sierra update.

In September, Apple offers another major reason to install OS X 10.11. This update does not change the version number, but it is important to install. If you’re still using OS X Yosemite, there’s a security update for that too.

Users still on OS X Yosemite may want to wait until the macOS Sierra release date this fall if they don’t want to upgrade twice in a few months.
