It happens more often than you think, but if you encounter an unresponsive iPhone, here’s what to do if your iPhone won’t turn on.
It could happen at any time. You’ll just sit there minding your own business and then decide to check your iPhone, but discover it’s not responding to anything you do. Pressing the home button does nothing and pressing the power button will give you negative results.
At this point you’re probably wondering what you’re doing, and that’s a very valid question to ask yourself. Fortunately, there are a few things you can try to get your iPhone to turn on and respond to your actions.
The good news is that your iPhone is unlikely to die completely as it turns into a paperweight, so there is nothing to worry about if this happens to you. Even so, I hope you took advantage of AppleCare+ and bought it for your iPhone.
In any case, there are a few things you can try if your iPhone won’t turn on.
Charge it
This can happen when you first wake up in the morning. You will go to check your iPhone and you will notice that it is not responding because it is very possible that the battery died at some point during the night.
Of course, if your iPhone has some juice left, the device will turn on partially and show you a low battery icon, but sometimes it can go completely dead and all you will get is a black screen.
In such a case, it’s a good idea to plug your iPhone in to charge it for 10 or 15 minutes. This will give him enough juice to fully strengthen.
However, do not plug it in and try to turn it on right away. Nothing will happen as the battery needs some time to recharge.
If that doesn’t work, move on to more drastic measures.
Hard Reset
Your iPhone may have too much battery life left and the device is still not turning on and responding to anything you do so the next solution you should try is a hard reset.
To hard reset your iPhone, press and hold the home button and power button at the same time and wait for an Apple logo to appear within 10-20 seconds before releasing both buttons.
From there, wait a bit for your iPhone to reboot and you should be greeted with the lock screen. Hard resetting your iPhone is equivalent to cutting off all power to a device, such as removing the battery or removing the cable if it has no battery. However, this is the alternative as the iPhone does not have a removable battery.
Also known as “power cycling”, which you probably do many times with your router. Hard resetting your iPhone is the same idea.
If your iPhone eventually turns on and gives you an error or tells you to connect your device to iTunes, you’ll want to restore your iPhone to iTunes to get everything back to normal.
Restore Your iPhone
When you plug in your iPhone and open iTunes, you’ll get a pop-up message that there’s a problem and you need to restore or update your iPhone. Restoring will completely wipe your iPhone, but I hope you were proactive enough to back up your iPhone every once in a while.
Click it and iTunes will start restoring your iPhone and getting it working again. The process can take up to 20 minutes, especially since it needs to download the latest iOS version, which can be several gigabytes in size.
After the procedure, your iPhone should be working again and you can now restore a backup to get all your apps and settings back.
