Upgrade From iOS 7 Jailbreak To iOS 8 Properly

iOS 8 was released last week before the launch of the iPhone 6, and while many users have already upgraded to the latest version, jailbreakers may have a hard time deciding whether to upgrade. However, if you’re jailbroken on iOS 7 and want to update to iOS 8, here’s how to do it properly.

Upgrading from a jailbroken iOS version to iOS 8 can be a tough decision. After all, you’ll lose your jailbreak until one comes out for iOS 8, which most likely won’t be for another few months. However, if you upgrade to iOS 8, you’ll get a bunch of new features, including improved notifications and many new features in iMessage.

If you’ve decided to lose your jailbreak and update to iOS 8, there are a few things to keep in mind before you take the plunge. Most importantly, how exactly you restore your iPhone and update it to iOS 8.

There are a few things to keep in mind when updating your jailbroken iPhone or iPad to iOS 8.

Perform a Full Backup

Before you do anything to update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8, you want to make sure you back up your device. The best way to do this is to back up via iTunes. The process of backing up both iPhone and iPad is the same and very easy to do:

Do a Full Restore

When it comes to updating to a major version of iOS 8, it’s always a good idea to do a full restore to avoid any update issues. Many people will update from iOS 7 to iOS 8 without wiping their device first, and this often results in update freezes, boot loops, etc. invites update issues such as

That’s why you want to make sure you fully restore your iPhone or iPad and then install iOS 8. After updating, simply restore your apps and settings from the backup you created in the previous section.

To perform a full restore, open and select iTunes with your device plugged in. This will completely wipe your device and then install a clean version of iOS 8. From here, you can start completely fresh (which I like to do most of the time anyway) or restore your apps and settings from a previous backup.

Avoid Over the Air Update

Another thing you’ll want to avoid is updating to iOS 8 over the air; that means updating directly on your iPhone or iPad. This doesn’t use up more storage, but it also opens up the possibility of updating for problems to occur.

It is best to update via iTunes to avoid any of these. Obviously, if you watched the previous episode, you should already be updated to iOS 8, but if you haven’t done a full restore, simply plug your iOS device into your computer and open iTunes. From there, click on it to download iOS 8 and install it on your device.

This method will ensure that the update process goes smoothly.

When Will We See the iOS 8 Jailbreak?

While there are iOS 8 betas allegedly already jailbrokenwe wouldn’t give up hope of a public release this month or even next month.

iOS-7-Cydia tweaks

In fact, we probably won’t see an iOS 8 jailbreak until the end of the year at the earliest, and that’s because jailbreak developers don’t want Apple to fix exploits for jailbreak too soon. What this means is that if the developers were to release the jailbreak to iOS 8 right now, Apple would have fixed it quickly before the final version of iOS 8 was released to the public, and that would have been bad news for obvious reasons.

As a result, we should expect the same timeframe as the iOS 7 jailbreak, which was released a few months after iOS 7 went public in September 2013. Therefore, you will have to wait a while for an official iOS 8 jailbreak to be released.
