External batteries are very practical accessories for smartphone users. A “battery pack” allows you to recharge your phone whenever you want without having to plug it into a power outlet. During long journeys or long excursions, these devices can be lifesaving.
There are many external battery models on sites like Amazon, but why waste money when you can? make your own battery pack ? Here’s how to do it.
What components are needed to make your own external battery?
Gather the following before you start components you will need. You will need a USB car charger (cigarette lighter), one or two 9-volt batteries, a 9V battery bracket, a soldering iron, and a small metal box. For example, you can buy a box of mint candies.
You will also need some tools: pliers, hammer and nails. Also get some insulation tape. Once you have all these components together, you are ready to assemble your homemade external battery.
How to assemble components to make your own external battery?
First use the pliers remove the plastic case from the USB charger. What you need is the USB port connected to the circuit board. Using the soldering iron, carefully solder the wires from the 9V coupler to the charger. If you don’t know how to use a soldering iron, ask for help.
The red (positive) wire connects to the charging spring, and the black (negative) wire connects to one of the two “arms” of the charger. don’t be mistaken. This is the most important part of this tutorial. Once everything is soldered correctly your external battery is already working.
However, to avoid carrying exposed electrical wires around in your pocket, it’s best to store your setup in a bag. Using hammer and nail drill holes on one side of the metal box.
Use the pliers expand the hole until there is enough space to accommodate the USB port. Finally, use insulation adhesive to cover everything. All you have to do is insert the batteries into the coupler and connect a cable to the USB charger.
Note that this power bank will not be as powerful as the best power banks available in the market. 9V batteries offer around 550mAh of charge, which is less than half the average capacity of modern smartphone batteries.
Either way, this DIY solution can always help. While we expect smartphone batteries to offer 200 times more autonomy, this little tip appears as a great alternative.
