You press the Power button on your smartphone or tablet and nothing happens, it won’t turn on anymore. It has happened to all of us at least once. It’s terrible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for the junkyard. If you are facing this issue, here are some tips and tricks.
Sometimes a smartphone or tablet may no longer turn on, either it is faulty or the problem is simply software, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for the trash. Here are some tips to follow if it ever happens to you.
Charge your smartphone for a few minutes
When an Android smartphone or tablet no longer turns on, the problem may be hardware-based or software-based. But the first thing to do check if the battery is not discharged, even if you did not charge the device a long time ago. Your battery may be damaged and eligible for replacement, or it may be draining faster than usual.
The first thing you should do is to check that this is not the problem by connecting your phone to a wall charger. If so, your phone screen should boot up very quickly and within a few minutes of pressing the Power button, the device should reboot. But if this method doesn’t work, try another charger or another power outlet, because it’s not impossible to have your charger replaced or your power supply faulty.
Force restart your smartphone
We agree that fewer and fewer smartphones offer a removable battery, but if you’re still lucky enough to get one, remove it. Sometimes the system may hang and require you to turn off the power for a few minutes before reinserting the battery and then turn your phone back on as you normally would using the power button.
Long press the power button
If your smartphone does not offer a removable battery, it is still possible to do the same by long pressing the Power button. Press the key for at least 10 seconds, force the device to shut down. You will then only need to turn it back on after a few seconds. If the error persists, the problem is most likely hardware related.
The smartphone turns on, but the screen does not turn on.
It’s entirely possible that your phone seems off to you, but screen is faulty. In this case, the device will be good to return to the after-sales service, but meanwhile you can also detect the malfunction. As in the previous step, you will press and hold your finger on the Power button to force the device to shut down. Then wait a few seconds and then turn it back on. If it’s just your screen that’s faulty and won’t turn on again, vibrate or hear a sound this will tell you the device is booting.
Check that the smartphone is not submerged in water
It may seem silly, but our mobile devices are afraid of water unless they are waterproof, and sometimes a few drops are all it takes to damage them. A spilled glass on the table, a very humid environment and damage can be significant. In this case, there are still solutions, provided you react quickly before going to the after-sales service. To do this, we invite you to refer to our tutorial on how to recover a smartphone that has fallen into water.
Do a factory reset via recovery
This is not an ideal solution, but your smartphone can be crash at system startup. Of course, it’s a scenario that would still be pretty rare, unless you tweak it a bit too much. Most of the time, the device gets stuck on the splash screen. If so, here’s what you need to do.
- Turn off your phone or tablet
- Enter recovery mode. For this you need to use a combination of several keys and this will vary depending on your device model (for example on Samsung Galaxy S7 you have to press and long press Volume Up + Home + Power keys simultaneously, on Nexus 6P Power and volume down keys which need to be pressed before selecting recovery via a menu ) Go to our forum to find the combination that corresponds to your device.
- choose option wipe data / factory reset and verify
- In a few minutes your Android smartphone will be like new
