Setting up VIP Mail on iOS 6

VIP mail is a new iOS 6 feature that provides custom alerts and a private inbox for emails from people you choose. This feature is similar to Gmail priority inbox, but for the built-in mail app.

A good use of VIP Mail would be to receive special notifications when an employer, family member or professor sends an email. By adding these people to VIP, the messages they send are filtered into their inbox for easy access.

VIP Mail can be set up in a few simple steps.

Select a person you want to be a VIP.

The person you selected should look like the image above. To add more contacts to the VIP list, tap again until all contacts are added.

Next Touch

In this next window, the notification settings for VIP can be changed according to the user’s preference. Just like any other notification, the user decides how to be alerted as well as the sound associated with the notification.

For the greatest effect, change the sound of the mail from the default rattle that plays when any email account receives a message. In addition, instead of using this method for all messages, it may be preferable to allow messages to appear in the notification center with a preview with VIP.

A great feature of using the VIP inbox is that it syncs with iCloud. No matter what device a user currently has, their inbox will be up to date and in sync.

One downside to using VIP is that it’s not possible to turn it off completely once it’s activated. Contacts can be removed by selecting edit, tapping the red circle next to the contact, and then selecting delete, but technically they are still in use.

Overall, VIP helps those with a large inbox not to miss any important messages.
