OneDrive Storage Plans: How to Get More Cloud Storage for Windows 10

What if your laptop, desktop and iPad could be connected together? What if the things you care about most could automatically appear on all your devices? What if you lose all the devices you own and need to start working again? It’s questions like these that Microsoft hopes OneDrive cloud storage apps and services will help answer.

OneDrive has existed in some form for years. It went by different names, first Windows Live Folders, then SkyDrive. Questionable naming conventions aside, Microsoft has focused on three scenarios from the start. OneDrive is designed to let you keep the things you care about away from your device. Second, OneDrive is designed to let you share these files on your phone, tablet, PC, or the web. Finally, OneDrive is for moving your files from PC to PC without physical media.

Windows 10’s OneDrive app makes it easier than ever to get started. Anything you drop into a OneDrive folder is uploaded to Microsoft’s servers. Anyone who provides a Microsoft Account to the OneDrive app gets 5GB of online storage to play. So, at some point you will definitely find yourself needing more.

Fortunately, there are a limited number of OneDrive storage plans to choose from. These plans give you more space to upload music, pictures and documents from your Windows 10 PC, iPad, iPhone or Android device. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Changes to OneDrive Storage Plans and Free Offer

As it does with the OneDrive name, Microsoft has continually changed its OneDrive storage plans. In the past, users could get 7GB of free storage with the service. Later, this number changed to 15GB for a while. As of now, every OneDrive user gets 5GB of free storage through the service. Over the years, Microsoft has offered coupons to some users and shared features that provide additional storage when subscribers persuade their friends to try the service.

To be clear, OneDrive storage plans are not required. As long as you have a Microsoft Account, you can use 5GB of storage and never pay Microsoft a penny. That is, you can do so as long as the amount of content you upload to OneDrive is less than your allotted storage.

Microsoft had a number of different OneDrive storage plans. Now they’re all gone. Instead, the company only keeps one. For $1.99 per month, you can increase your OneDrive storage by 50GB. There is no way to stack Office 365 plans for a single account. In other words, you can’t buy two 50GB plans and expect 100GB of storage to be available.

There are no other OneDrive plans as Microsoft has rolled out the service to the Office 365 subscription service. For $6.99 per month, you can add 1TB of OneDrive storage and access Microsoft’s Office apps. We’re talking about things like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The company also gives some credit for the Skype call. You can prepay for $69.99 for an entire year. For $99.99 per year or $9.99 per month, 5 people can each get 1TB of storage, access to Microsoft Office apps, and Skype landline calling.

To be clear, OneDrive for Business is a different proposition. That way you can get 1TB of storage for $60/year or 1TB of storage for up to 5 users. Like the Office 365 for Business plans, these plans force you to pay for each person using the service.

If you think you will exceed 50GB of storage. It’s best to research the entire Office 365 subscription. You may not need the extra programs, but competing Dropbox charges $8.25 a month for 1TB of storage, making OneDrive a little cheaper than its closest competitor.

Where Should You Change Your OneDrive Storage Plans?

There are two ways to get more OneDrive storage. The first is through OneDrive apps. They are available on iPhone, Android and Windows. If you tap the info icon next to your picture, you’ll get a breakdown of how much storage you’ve used. This area will also show the next step of the plan you currently have.

The OneDrive website also lets you choose new OneDrive storage plans. Once you’re logged in, simply tap or click the link in the bar on the far left of your screen. On the web, you’ll get a breakdown of the storage bonuses you’ve gotten by convincing others to sign up. Depending on how long you’ve been using the service, you may find that a loyalty bonus of around 10GB has already been applied to your account. Download the OneDrive apps for iPhone and Android and get 15GB of additional storage for free.
