Slack and Microsoft (with Microsoft Teams) are working hard to replace email. However, the standard email experience is permanent. The majority still prefer to use Gmail and Outlook to stay in touch with the latest happenings from banking updates, favorite newsletters and social media accounts. Of all the email providers, Gmail is the most popular. The service is natively available on all Android devices and as a result dominates the consumer email experience with over 1.5 billion monthly active users.
Most users check Gmail’s Inbox once a week. If you have too many subscriptions and banking activities, your inbox may be cluttered. Gmail offers many functions such as creating rules, marking all emails as read, and more. You may have seen that users have thousands of unread emails on their mobile phones. t makes it difficult to navigate the entire email experience and in hundreds of emails you may miss some important ones.
In this post, we will discuss how to mark all emails as read on Gmail web and mobile. We’ll also talk about some tricks to improve your Gmail experience. Lets start.
Mark All Emails as Read on Gmail Web
There are multiple ways to mark all emails as read in Gmail on the web. Google does not provide a direct option to mark all emails as read. Follow the steps below to mark all emails as read on Gmail web.
Stage 1: Open the browser on your computer and go to Gmail.
Step 2: Sign in using your Google account credentials.
Stage 3: From the default ‘Inbox’ menu you will see that your emails are neatly divided into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums.
Step 4: At the top you will find the Search Mail option.
Step 5: Medicine tag:inbox:unread in the search field at the top of the page.
Step 6: Gmail displays the first 20 unread messages in your inbox.
Step 7: You can tap on the three-dot menu and select ‘Mark all as read’. Alternatively, you can select ‘Select All’, tap the down arrow icon and select ‘Read’ from the drop-down menu.
You can also tap ‘Select all’ in each section and mark all emails as read. However, I would not recommend using this option as you may miss some important emails in the process.
You should follow the steps above, take a look at the unread emails and if everything looks fine, use the mark all as read option.
Mark All Emails as Read in Gmail Mobile App
I usually recommend marking all emails as read from Gmail web. The experience on mobile is not as intuitive as on the web. As for mobile apps, both Android and iOS carry the same UI and UX for the Gmail app.
For this article, I will use screenshots from the Android app. You can expect to use the same steps in the iOS Gmail app to mark all emails as read.
Stage 1: Open the Gmail app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap on the hamburger menu and go to the app Settings.
Stage 3: Go to your Gmail account.
Step 4: Inbox type is set to Default. Tap on it and select ‘Unread first’.
Step 5: Go back to your Gmail Inbox and you will see all your Unread emails on the default homepage. Tap on the hamburger menu and you’ll find a new ‘Unread’ tab.
Step 6: Tap the ‘Unread’ tab and take a look at all the unread emails in your inbox. Long press an email to select it. Then tap the profile picture of all emails to select it.
Step 7: Tap the ‘Read’ icon at the top to mark the selected items as read in the Gmail mobile app.
Alternatively, you can write tag:inbox:unread in the search bar above, it will filter unread emails in Gmail inbox. Select them and mark emails as read.
Keep Unread Inbox on Top in Gmail Web
Google provides an option to keep unread emails at the top of the Inbox. Navigating every tab in Gmail can be confusing. You can always use the Advanced Settings option in Gmail to streamline the Inbox experience. Follow the steps below to enable Unread Inbox at the top in Gmail.

Step 6: Hit Save Changes at the bottom.
You will now see all unread emails at the top. Check them out and mark them as read.
Reach Inbox Zero
Inbox Zero is the new fashion. Sometimes, you may struggle with the Gmail mobile app to find out which email missed your notification.
