The LG G5 was launched after a presentation at the end of February. After presenting us with our test last week, we have selected tips and tricks to better use the new smartphone from the Korean manufacturer.
1. Configure the fingerprint reader
One of the first things you should do when you get home with your shiny new LG G5 is to set up the fingerprint reader. You can then unlock it almost instantly by placing your finger on the back of the device. Agree that it’s more practical than writing some code or drawing a model! To do this, all you need to do is:
- go to menu Settings > Fingerprint reader and security
- Select the submenu “Finger prints”
- Set up another security unlock method if you haven’t already
- click “Add fingerprint”
- follow the onscreen instructions
2. Set a Knock Code to unlock the screen
LG offers another method to unlock your phone by tapping Knock Code, other than fingerprint reader and traditional security options. Here is how to identify a Knock Code:
- see you on the menu Settings > Screen lock > Choose a lock
- Enter submenu KnockCode
- Set a code that you can easily remember by tapping the screen 3 to 8 times
- Hit “Continue” and then re-enter your code
- Create a security PIN in case you forget it
3. Enable the always-on display
Also available on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the “Always on display” function allows you to view the weather, date and notifications in black and white with the screen off for minimal energy consumption. To enable it, simply do the following:
- see you on the menu Settings > Display and select the option “Always on Display”
- Turn the key to the ON position
- Click “Define what is displayed” to customize the screen

Like all Android smartphones, the LG G5 offers three navigation keys. In this case, these are the touch keys. It is possible to customize them, rearrange them and even add two additional buttons:

- choose option “Combination of Buttons”
- Rearrange the touch buttons as you wish by dragging them
5. Restore app drawer
LG G5 bids farewell to the famous app drawer with its new interface. Finally, almost to the disappointment of some users, LG offers an alternative LG UX 4.0 launcher that lets you restore the app drawer. To do this, all you need to do is:
- Launch or download the LG SmartWorld app in this link if you don’t have it yet
- Search and download the LG UX 4.0 app
- Click on your phone’s home touch button and choose Home(UX 4.0) as the default launcher.

The LG G5 we tested last week lets you tweak the quick settings pane to better suit your needs by changing the order of the tiles or adding new options. Here’s how:
- Pull down the notifications panel to reveal the quick settings menu
- select icon “Settings” gear-shaped (top right)
- Add, remove and move icons to your contacts using drag drop and enable/disable options by checking/unchecking the boxes.
7. Add Lock Screen Shortcuts
By default, the LG G5 lock screen phone app offers three shortcuts for voice search and camera. But did you know that it is possible to add 2 additional shortcuts so that you can view up to 5 of them. However, keep in mind that they will only appear if you do not lock your screen or use the Smart Lock function. Here’s how:
- see you on the menu Settings > Lock screen
- Scroll down for option “Shortcuts”
- Scroll through the list of apps to define which one you want to assign a shortcut to
- Save Changes

The very interesting Smart Settings option allows you to configure your phone to perform certain tasks. depending on your location or connected devicesFor example, disabling Wifi as soon as you leave your home, or launching the music app as soon as you connect headphones to the jack. To enable this option, all you have to do is:
