HP released its first Sprout PC a few years ago, and while its most important 3D scanning technology wasn’t new, HP’s implementation was intriguing to say the least.
This year, at CES 2018, HP showcased an updated version of the Sprout computer. called Sprout Pro. For those of you unfamiliar with HP’s Sprout line of devices, these are all-in-one PCs mainly aimed at graphic designers and 3D model workers. The computer includes an overhead camera that can scan and capture any 3D object you place underneath it and create a 3D model of the object.
While the idea is great, the technology is also really costly and makes no sense to anyone who already owns a high-end desktop PC. Where is this HP’s new Z 3D camera it fits.
HP basically disassembled the Sprout Pro and made the 3D mapping camera a separate product. this can be used with most current PCs as long as the back of the monitor is flat. This means that if someone is looking for a 3D mapping camera but doesn’t want to invest in a Sprout Pro, they can buy the Z 3D camera and use it with their existing computer.
The Z 3D camera works like Sprout Pro’s camera and can scan any 3D object and make its 3D model. it can then be manipulated and studied. The camera can also easily scan 2D documents and can be used to collaborate over live video. The company says its Z 3D camera will scan objects with “computer graphics-friendly resolutions” and also offer individual texture maps for physically-based rendering and VR.
This is good news for any professional working with 3D models, as he no longer has to invest in an entirely new system, but instead can buy the camera and use it with his existing computer. Since the camera is also quite portable, it will be easy for users to carry if they want to use it with multiple devices. That said, HP has yet to mention anything about its availability or pricing.
