How to View and Manage Your Location History in Google Maps

Google Maps helps you search for new places and find the best routes, while saving them in your Location History. You can use the Timeline feature in Google Maps to track every place you visit. However, you may want to remove some visits from your history.

Of all the neat tricks Google Maps has at hand, Timeline has to be the most useful. It can help you easily track your steps. Whether it’s the name of the gift shop you visited last month or the photos you took during your last trip, Timeline can help you relive all those memories.

Let’s see how you can view, edit or delete your location history in Google Maps.

The Google Maps app works pretty much the same on both Android and iOS. I am using an Android device for this article.

How to View Location History on Google Maps

To view your travel history for a particular day, week or month, follow the steps outlined below.

Stage 1: Open the Google Maps app on your phone and tap your account circle in the top right corner. Next, select the Timeline option from the list.

Step 2: Swipe down on the bottom half of the screen to see detailed information about each trip, including location, distance traveled, travel time, and mode of transportation. In case of incorrect or incomplete information, Google Maps also allows you to edit the trip or remove it from your timeline.

With the Timeline feature, you can also view your location history for any day by selecting a date from the top calendar.

Additionally, it keeps a list of all kinds of places, cities, and countries you’ve visited throughout your history.

How to Turn Off Location History in Google Maps

While the Timeline feature may come in handy in certain situations, the idea of ​​Google tracking your location may be daunting to some. Fortunately, you can disable the timeline feature in a few easy steps.

Stage 1: Open the Google Maps app on your phone and tap your account circle in the top right corner. Next, select the Timeline option from the list.

Step 2: Now click on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and go to ‘Settings and privacy’. Scroll to location settings and tap on ‘Location History is on’.

Stage 3: Turn off the Location History button in the activity controls window. It then informs you about what works and what doesn’t when the app is closed. Finally, click the Pause button to turn off location history.

Note: Turning off the timeline feature will not remove Google’s access to your location data as long as you use it for navigation and Google searches.

If you’re worried about your map activity being recorded, Google Maps also has an incognito mode like Google Chrome and YouTube.

How to Delete Location History on Google Maps?

If you don’t mind using your historical location data, Google Maps also has an option to delete it. Here’s how to do it.

Stage 1: Open the Google Maps app on your phone and tap your account circle in the top right corner. Next, select the Timeline option from the list.

Step 2: Click on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and go to ‘Settings and privacy’.

Stage 3: Tap ‘Delete All Location History’ to delete all location history. After that, select the checkbox that says ‘I understand and want to delete’ and hit the Delete button.

Alternatively, you can choose to delete the location history for a specific time range by tapping ‘Delete Location History range’ and entering the start and end date.

On top of that, you can also set up an auto-delete feature to periodically delete history by selecting ‘Automatically Delete Location History’.

Bonus: How to Create a Heatmap with Google Location History

By combining your location history with third-party API and tools, you can create your own heatmap of all places visited during a trip. Here’s how.

Stage 1: To download your location data, go to Google Takeout. Under ‘Select data to include’, click Deselect all. Now scroll down and tick the checkbox that says Location History and then click Next step.

Step 2: Select Delivery method, File type and size, and Frequency, then click Create export. Once the export is created, click the download button and a compressed file will be downloaded to your device.

Note: The download may take some time depending on the size of your Google maps data.

Stage 3: Now open the downloaded file and open the Location History folder inside.

Step 4: Go to the heatmap feature in the Location History Visualizer and load the LocationHistory.json file.
