With iOS 6, iPhone users can take panoramic photos with the built-in Camera app, thanks to the new iPhone Panorama mode.
Panoramic photography is a great way to share a wide view photo, get a glimpse of a new room inside, or capture a large group of friends sitting at a table.
iPhone panorama mode is only available on iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, so older iPhone users will need to rely on many third-party panorama apps like 360 Panorama.
The iPhone panorama mode is hidden in the camera options, but once it’s in place, it’s easy to turn it on or off to take panoramic photos and revert to normal photos.
How to Take Panorama on iPhone in iOS 6
The video below explains how to take a panorama on iPhone 4S with iOS 6 and the same goes for iPhone 5. The key is to stay very still, so a small tripod can be a good investment.
Open normally on iPhone.
Tap the button at the top middle of the screen.
Tap on it.
Align the camera and . No need to hold down.
Keeping the arrow on the line, move iPhone to the right. This allows iPhone to capture a collection of photos at the same level.
It is also possible to take vertical panoramic photos on iPhone, just turn the iPhone sideways. I find performance to be best as you start in the brightest area and work your way up to the darkest. When in Panorama mode, the iPhone doesn’t take into account changes in brightness well, so areas may be darker or brighter than expected.
When shooting a vertical panorama on iPhone, keeping the arrow on the line is more difficult than taking a horizontal panorama.
Tap done to exit Panorama mode on iPhone.
Sharing Panoramic Photos from iPhone
Panoramas taken by iPhone are quite large, 16MB for my creations. When sharing to Facebook or Twitter via the Photos app, the app automatically compresses the photos to a shareable size.
Email isn’t the best option if you want to share photos with someone to print them or look at them on a computer. This automatically reduces the size of the photo.
I suggest uploading the photos to DropBox to share with a link.
It is possible to share the photo with the new Shared PhotoStream feature, but it is not the best for printing as the downloaded file is only 2MB in size.
